Not sure what outer shaft you mean. Possibly the oil pump drive. Engages with the two slots on the convertor. I would expect it to turn, but perhaps not easily.

I have uploaded a LR manual for the 4HP22 here. Might help.

I hear you. Did mine with the TC still attached. Won't do that again. I wasn't on my own, but still...

Oh. Just looked at the pics on my 27" monitor and not my phone. I see you did the same.

Reminds me of a mate who put a VW Bettle flat four engine on his chest then wriggled under the car and installed it.

Those were incredible. Probably a 30min installation time for those who've been around the traps.
    Cheers

So the answer is pump cog not being driven by the Torque converter due to bent flex plate. Next question is why is it bent?
Gearbox was out 60,000Km ago to replace the "O" ring on the pump and i fitted a "heavy duty" flex plate at the time. Would have thought it would have died long ago if it didn't go back together properly at the time.

I'll take a punt it wasn't assembled correctly, even though it was done some time ago.

It often happens when installed in the wrong order and the flex plate gets bent when the bellhousing bolts get done up.

It may have driven ok like that with the pump being driven by an "interference" fit.

    But I'm no expert.

Discorevy may have a completely different take on it, and I'd definitely go with his opinion rather than mine.

Back in my RAEME days we had some Kombis. To get rid of me one day, the Sgt told me to go and remove the engine from one to do the clutch. Never done one or even seen one before. An hour later, including collecting tools, I was back. Now what Sarge? He sent me to the workshop store for the clutch and told me to put it back in.

Trickiest bit is the heater cables IIRC. 4 bolts, well studs, and it's done. Damn sight easier to lift than a 4HP22/LT230 combo, that's for sure. When (if) I do the rear main on my D2 I'll be taking the engine out. I have a crane to do that.....
