I have BFG 255.70x16 on mine and am happy with them. No touching anywhere.
just check if your rims are 7 inch or 8 inch as you should not put 245 on 8 inch rims.
Also the 255.70 is now a common size as is stock on Ranger etc so you should be able to get out of trouble in Broome, and also remember that 255.70x16 Juuust fits on the spare tyre carrier without any mods.

In Victoria, you can only add 50mm to the diameter of your tyre from the factory size. 265/70R16 is about on the limit.
I am not a rock crawler or double diamond track runner, so I am yet to meet any terrain that a 31" can't handle. I need road sensibility as well as off-road safety and capability.
265/70 fits my spare wheel carrier. I have a facelift model that came with 8" rims, so 245/70/75 no go as rim is too wide. Std fitment was 255/65 (same size as 235/70 fitted on 7" rims) on the 8" rims ... previous owner had 255/70 fitted. Good size. Going to 265/70 ended up being 1 size wider / 1 size taller. Better size (imho the limit if you tow with a std tune).

But but but 265/75's look so good !
and I keep telling myself I need that height under the diffs as I'm used to running 255/85's on the Deefer
(says he who's new D2 has near new 235/70 HT's atm)

Better for towing than 245? Sorry don't understand.
"Land Rover - making mechanics out of everyday motorists for nearly 70 years"
The 245/75 & 265/70 are pretty much the same diameter.
245/75 = 30.47inches / 774mm
265/70 = 30.61inches / 777mm
0.39% difference
75% of 245mm = 183.75mm wall height
70% of 265mm = 185.50mm wall height
255/70 = 30.06inches / 763mm
235/70 = 28.95inches / 735mm
255/65 = 29.05inches / 738mm
Bigger the diameter the lower your engine revs for a given speed (in the same gear).
Engine revs too low ... engine doesn't develop as much power ... need to use more throttle ... takes longer to accelerate / get up to speed
For general driving & playing offroad the 245/75 265/70 & 265/75 seem to be good common choices ... but if your mainly towing (bigger loads) then a smaller 235/70 245/70 255/70 would be a wiser choice ... unless you get a tune for the ECU to add some extra ponies ... then the larger tyres will work ... for me (my opinion) the 265/70 I have are about the limit "with a std tune" for towing/touring (lacking occasionally) but get the job done ... my previous 255/70 would have been better but they were $75/tyre more (x5 tyres)
265/75 for towing (1.5-2t) with a std tune would imho be painful !!You'd need to be doing 110-120km/hr or more to get the engine revs high enough to develop enough horsepower to pull the load (in 4th locked) .... or spend alot of time in 3rd locked at high engine revs at 100km/hr (maybe 2800-3000rpm). With my current 265/70 setup 90km/hr (actual) is 2000rpm.
Take a look here *Alloy Wheel & Tyre Size Calculator you can plug in tyre sizes and do comparisons.

Bigger is not necessarily better.
