Is it chipped or isn't it?

Been hijacking markf's thread with questions not relevant to his query. So, moving here.

Trying, on a VERY limited budget, to get my TD5 back up to scratch. Have to say I'm disappointed to find some of the things that have gone before, perpetrated by a certain nameless indie, and of course me.

Anyway, the point of this thread. Trying to get it up to scratch performance wise. When I got the car it came with some documentation that suggested a chip tune ( MSB ). People with other TD5 D2s have commented on its performance in the past. However, there is no socket on the board in the ECU.. Of course, 25 years ago someone could easily have hard soldered a tuned chip in. I can do that myself on pcbs It's not difficult. The chip has no markings on it whatsoever.

As I mentioned on the other thread, I was only getting around 0.86 bar boost. I tweaked the WG rod and got 1.15. I can't get more from it.

So. I get an "air circuit logged low" fault, which I guess is the MAF. The car has the EGR deleted and I believed that meant the MAF wasn't needed. Happy to be corrected. Disconnecting the MAF makes zero difference to the performance, which still seems to be ok. In fact, the "tweak" seems to have given it more response at partial throttle openings.

If I can ever get my emulation software to recognise my SD card reader I'll format a card and record a .csv file.

Meanwhile, I'll get back to repairing poor wiring etc.

Following this with interest. Mine has never been able to pull the skin off a rice pudding.

IMO it's definitely not "chipped" being an early modell as then nobody knew how to remap a Td5 also no tuners would hard solder a remapped chip cos it's silly but if it was it should be visible. Being de-EGRd the MAF is useless. I'll wait for the live data log then i'll tell you more.

Bruce Davis was doing MSB's years ago. He did mine in at the start of 2005 and had been doing them for a fair while prior to that. I hadn't heard of socket use until a fair bit after when mine was done. I thought he was one of the first, if not the first in Aus to be doing this.

Not arguing with your assessment, but I do disagree with that bit. A simple hot air rework station and I can replace a simple 40 pin chip invisibly. It isn't at all difficult. The chip resettles onto the pads easily and totally.

    1. There's no fool proof way to tell if it's been remapped without dumping the rom.

    2. I have never seen an un-socketed remapped MSB, doesn't mean they don't exist, I've just never seen one.

    3. Just out out interest, what is the fuel tune and variant listed in the nanocom?

Another question. I had a fair bit of oil in the red plug. About three months ago I replaced the injector harness, but still get oil there. I assume this is oil still in the harness between the engine and the ECU?

I didn't record that last bit, but will look tomorrow when I'm in a position to reconnect the battery, which is not now.....

After you replaced the injector loom you must keep cleaning the plug untill all the residual oil leaves the harness.

Usually those who resolder chips dont use the same coating or not at all and the fresh soldering points are "brighter" or at least a bit different colour ... that's from my own experience not a postulate while it's not a very relevant discussion
