I think they both lack "the right stuff" these days... and are not looking after this country or its people with regards to this subject or many others... They are all just in there satisfying their own needs and ego's and maintaining a status quo that has been dysfunctional for a long time now.

I reckon it's so knackered that maybe it's time for an alternative system without all these clowns. But that's for another thread some day.
I have heard an explanation for this state of affairs from ex-politicians and from political commentators who seem to know what they are talking about.

The media these days is labouring under the misapprehension that the news is just another form of entertainment. Consequently they are not interested in publishing or broadcasting sensible explanations of policy, but prefer witty one liners and mindless slogans, preferable two or three word, alliterative slogans.

It is probably a bit of a chicken and egg situation, but it is a waste of time for a politician to give a sensible explanation to the media, because the media won't publish it. They think the public need to be entertained rather than informed. So politicians have learned that the only utterance likely to be used by the media is a short sentence or slogan that tells us nothing, but sounds good.

Politicians have been reduced to playing a game forced on them by the media. You could argue that they should rise above that, but I can't see it happening while the media are convinced, rightly or wrongly, that the majority of the population have the attention span of a goldfish.

When you combine that with the emphasis the media, some politicians and some members of the public place on opinion polls, it is no wonder that we don't get long term planning, commitment to sensible policies and informed debate.

I agree with your comments vnx205's, also I would like to add the there is a benefit for the politicians to encourage ignorance in the electorade.
Things will be much better for the population if the electorade was well informed and have an inteligent approach to important issues but detrimental for those who benefit from the ignorance on it.

I find the coment that the media are to blame as they are in the entertainment industry for poor information provided to the comunity a bit odd.wont say what i think in case it offends.

I dont find it at all hard to get sencible information.did any body bother to listen to the leader of the EU claim that prime minister gillard was spot on and when the treaty is signed all will be apples.

I wonce worked with a gent that didnt register to vote or believe you should as the conservatives would find himand ask him to pay tax..-he listened to tripple J and thought that they where real journalist and they new what was what..- and claimed that all polititions are corrupt and self serving.

he now works at a mine at $2300 a week with his extended family and his wife and kids are on some pension.

and im bellow the average wage wondering how we make ends meet under this labour government.

Why? I wasn't trying to argue that they are to blame, but that they are contributing to the problem and that the politicians are now trapped.

Wont say what i think in case it offends.
I will try not to be offended - I promise.

    Yes I heard that.

I think there is some evidence that the people who actively seek out detailed information about issues are in a minority. On the other hand the people who blindly accept everything that Alan Jones and his kind say must be a significant number if we are to believe the ratings they seem to achieve.

Trouble is, they are probably right! And what is worse, the few who have a longer attention span already know the answer (or think they do).

Funny just tonight I saw that lunatic evil doer Bob Brown on the ABC news saying that the Govt should now "join the greens" to fix the asylum seeker/boat people issue.

That nut bag has convinced himself he and his mob are now leading the country... Boy are we in trouble! Lead by an ex solicitor who doesn't know the law and a tree hugger who thinks he can do better.

Back to the subject though. I would like to pose a question. Is it possible for the people to legally challenge their elected leaders? I am thinking that none of us voted for the CT, so therefore they are not representing the nations interests, so therefore they are really actually enemies of the nation and should be shipped off to guantonimo bay to await trial and conviction for treason! Now that's hamming it all up a bit, but it seems like a good question.

Can we sue our leaders for not serving the nations interests?

As with anything else, perhaps we need to make an example of one to deter the rest and get things back on track! Maybe then they would focus on serving the nation and not big business, the media and themselves.

    From the NSW smart politicians

"The budget will include an announcement of increased NSW mining royalties, to punish the Federal Government because of the expected impact of the carbon tax."

Oh dear... If they are prepared to take more from business to make a point, how long before they work out the little guy should be spanked as a part of that punishment process?

Thought I'd revisit this because of an interesting development in the USA.

Nobel Prize-Winning Physicist Resigns Over Global Warming | Fox News

It's pleasing to see someone of note standing up for the count on a point of principle...!

While we're on the subject of Nobel prizes, I am inspired by the story of the Israeli chemist Dr Dan Shechtman who was recently awarded his prize for discovering 'quasi crystals'... derided, laughed at , called a disgrace by his boss and virtually kicked out of his research team ...why? because he observed something which went against preconceived notions and forced "experts" to reconsider their own notions of what is "true" ... glad that never happens on this site

I was interested in the comments of DT-P38 particularly a comment in his last paragraph “focus on serving the nation and not big business, the media and themselves.".

If we look at the 3 issues of the day Carbon tax, Poker machines and resources rent tax. Who are lobbing govt and ramming advertising and misinformation down our throats Big Business to stop them?

The clubs are one of the worst crying poor etc. In NSW clubs receive $ 300 million in tax concessions and spend less than that on "good works". Therefore if we kept the 300mil imagine what could be accomplished each year if we didn't waste money on them. Also I don't want my kid’s sports to be subsidized on the back of some families misery.

It would be good if companies were held to account for misinformation and lies.
