Thread: Electric fence question...No gate tapes

Hi DB, One way is to get some electric fence cable, it looks a lot like old style metal core spark plug lead, and run it inside a piece of garden hose under the ground between the gate posts. At each end turn the hose 180 degrees back on itself so that rain can't enter. Attach your tape at each end and away you go. This cable is sold by your friendly rural produce store.

The cheap and easy way is to nail a lump of 4X2 or whatever you have handy to each gate post and string your tape or string (on insulators) between them. Looks a bit daggy but is cheap and effective.

so I cant just run the electric tape thats going to go around the field through the garden hose like you have suggested?

I was thinking a bit of plastic poly pipe in a U shape in the ground then I could put 90 degree bends in as it comes out the ground so rain cant get in and run the tape through that ....im talking small diameter stuff is that the same or is the garden hose material better?

Can't you just begin at one side of the gate opening, run the stand off around the paddock and conclude at the other side of the gate opening? You don't need a completed circle as it were... we had one when I was a kid ...was simply a straight run of 400 yards with the pulse generator in a box about 100 yards down the track...tap...tap...tap... was good fun daring visiting kids to pee on it

The wire under the ground between the fence post needs to be insulated.
Rural supply outlets have this type of insulated wire. Its good to put it inside some irrigation pipe to protect it.
The tape would soon short out to the ground if buried, even if inside a pipe

I have seen it done but haven't done it myself. Presumably your local rural shop may know how. If you don't get much luck there are plastic handles with metal loops that you can loop over the tape, these are much easier than battery clips and can be handled when the wire is hot. You could put one either end of the gate. If you want it to stand off the gate you could use a steel picket either side of the gate by bringing the pickets in by 1-2 mtrs depending how much swing in the gate.

I am presuming the underground mechanism you are looking for would work similar to the plastic handles ie. an outer form of insulation with some form of inner core that conduct the pulse.

Not sure if you are hard wiring into your mains but I recently purchased a solar charging unit and if you haven't purchased a one as yet these re much better than the battery ones

Aye, it's common practice back home on the farms there, we have it on the gateways at home where where tractors are going in and out all the time. Just run some electrical cable through some poly pipe or conduit, and bury it under the gateway. Bring each end up to the insulated standoff on each gatepost and connect to the tape on each side. fill the ends of the pipe with silicon if you don't want it filling up with water or mud over time.

So I could just get a small amout of this wire run it under ground through some pipe and attach it to the tape on either side when it comes out the ground?

Micheal I dont want the tape in the gate areas at all....thats the purpose of my question....

and I have a solar unit got it for Chrisy...but its more of a mobile unit. the plan is to tape all the paddocks but move the unit to which ever paddock is being used at the time
