If he is anything like the other Landlooser owners I know he will be absolutely right because he knows everything, he owns a toymota.
You will have to prove him wrong and then tell him he used the toymota offroad ability coefficient, he should expand his horizons and consider there are other vehicles out there and he should recalculate using a Land Rover offroad ability coefficient.

There's an old saying from surfing that "all big waves are measured in increments of bull****", and I dare say that off road, hills use the same standard.

He's a good bloke, a bit eccentric but he's a hoot.
Even used to own a landrover.
My only issue is when my girlfriend asked him specifically about the Discovery model he said he thought they were "Nothing special"

Disco Muppet I think that you should plan a nice quiet drive offroad somewhere to take the old bloke for a spin . I would ask him for some tips on how to drive the track.

I am sure that a generous and nice bloke like yourself could find a nice drive that wouldn't tax the discovery too hard but would leave him wondering what he would have to do to his toyota to go where you just went.

Just agree with him .................................... and point out that Land Rovers are designed and built for a purpose and don't need any 'special' mods or accessories to achieve their design purpose.
As standard they can achieve what other specially modified brands can only try to emulate.

I thought it was funny when I took the Freelander 2 up Blue Rag and met a bunch of people watching me go up the final few inclines. They were all in Jap cars that I could have almost driven under. The Freelander looked puny bog standard bar the tyres parked beside them. I think that I may have well and truly shattered their sense of accomplishment.

And then there are those who get it wrong.......
