Don't know about a manual but our auto cost $3900 to recondition.

Place up in the Hunter selling a recon R380 Land Rover R380 Gearbox Discovery 2 TD5 V8 Reconditioned Exchange Warranty | eBay

$2200 is still steep, but a bit better than $3900

Thanks all so far, would I also need a new clutch or is that part of the gearbox reconditioning? If I were to buy one like the eBay ad mentioned earlier?
Any advice what else to do whilst box out would be good.

Isn't it reasonably common for fifth gear and reverse to get a bit noisy while the rest of the gearbox is still good?

If it is caught early enough, isn't it possible that all it needs is a couple of bearings replaced? That can even be done with the gearbox still in the vehicle.
