Dubbo Transmissions overhauled my LT95 a few years back. No problems other than I scored a good quality screwdriver on top of the box!

As vnx205 commented, it may be a need for only a couple of bearings.

    Hey mate.
So sorry to hear of your woes. It seems that the R380 does not like towing in 5th. I am guilty of this with our 23ft van. I am currently trying to get to the bottom of a vibration that occurs at 110km/h. I think it's gearbox related due to towing. Have you concidered an Ashcroft upgraded R380?. It has a beefed up 5th gear bearing. Aparantly the fith cog looses mesh due to a weak/worn bearing. Something to contemplate if your considering keeping the Disco as I am. Hope you get it sorted soon mate an your on your way. We stayed at the Big4 not so long ago and it's a good park close to town and walking distance of the RSL.
    Regards
    Robbo

You can just drop the transfer case and replace the oil pump and the 2 rear support bearings and it will do another 100-200 thousand kays it doesn't have to be expensive.
If its gone too far it will strip the gears and then you need to change them as well.
Remember Don drove his a couple of thousand kays home in 4th gear it may be better to do that and get an Ashcroft box from the UK.

Hi Robbo, do not have time to wait for the Ashcroft one, would think nrma would get cranky. The dungog supply looks closest, even hiring a ute and do a day trip from here might be possible to speed up the process. Nrma man gave me a contact to try in town and also have jdnsw option. PIA and half tempted to trade it but for what?

No consolation to you but apparently you're not alone as the BIL's previous Triton and the nephew's Pajero both did fifth gear because of towing and had to be upgraded. You might be lucky and get away with just fixing fifth rather than the whole box. Apparently its one of the reasons autos can be better for towing as the torque converter copes better than fifth in a manual, so I'm told. Might be worth getting a transmission specialist to open it up rather than just assuming you need a complete replacement. Just a thought. Has the oil filter in the gearbox been replaced recently, as they can clog up and impede the oil flow?

All Four x 4 Spares at Kotara (Newcastle) will most likely have what you need.

You often can just do 5th from the back without disturbing the rest of the box, but you would want to look in to see how much metal has travelled around inside just in case.

Mine went after 312000 km with a lot of towing, the rest of the gearbox was ok, but was fitted with new bearings as it was already apart, and the clutch was replaced even though they thought it had another 100-150,000 km left.

It was sent by my local LR guy to someone called Terry so possibly the one mentioned in an earlier post, and I had it back in three days.

You can fit a couple of bearings for a lot less than that.

So far no-one has given any details about the current box that justifies completely replacing it.

Is there something I have missed or something you are not telling us that justifies doing more than just fixing the fifth gear problem?
