Thread: Spare wheel on the bonnet.

It is a separate bonnet which is available. My mate did this years ago with his 130 to a standard bonnet, works but has cracks now after 15 years. Great for resting your rifle on when shooting over the bonnet, or sitting in when spot lighting.


Biggest problem is checking the oil etc. It now takes 2 people as when you pull the release you need someone at the front to lift the bonnet otherwise when you let go of the bonnet release the bonnet stays locked as there is too much weight for the bonnet to pop up on it's own.


He is now looking at a swing out rear mount spare tyre holder.

Pretty sure mine is a standard bonnet with a kit. My guess is it's been on for the best part of 300 000kms. No cracking to date. You shouldn't need two people to unlock the bonnet, maybe there is an upgraded spring?? It is an effort to lift the bonnet.

It will in part depend on what model your deefer is.

AFAIK the bonnets from late '90s on and more particularly the TD5s are not strong enough in standard form to carry a spare (but I would guess that strengthening could be done).

The bonnets after the TD5 have a raised section, and a spare on this would inhibit visibility for the driver.

If it is earlier than the above a spare wheel kit is (or was) available, otherwise a Series bonnet mount can be pop riveted onto your bonnet.

While the standard non-spare bonnet support will work, it may be advisable to strengthen it as per the army Pretendie bonnet stay (this version does not does not have a spare tyre mounting on the bonnet). The Defender mounting kit mentioned above included a stronger stay.

They look good though. Murray (rigidig) made one for a 90, pics are here somewhere, and we happened to spot it in Melb. Thought it was an old vehicle in really good nick , untill I spotted the Puma bonnet

I had this problem too. I saw a great solution though. Someone had a loop of piano wire sticking out of front grill. I assume it was hooked up to the release lever so you could pull it, release the bonnet and keep it popped from the front of the vehicle.

Yer I was thinking of doin a secret latch release.
