I really do think you're missing the point here.

    1) Horse drawn carriages are meant to stop at red lights (as are cyclists and motorists). This only went through three sets on red so we can ignore that cos cyclists do much worse things according to the latest anecdata, and what the Daily Telegraph and Alan Jones have said.

    2) Horse drawn carriages are not allowed to use the bike lane on the Princes Bridge but I can look at something else during that section of the footage and pretend it didn't happen.

    3) The City Of Melbourne have confirmed that the driver of this carriage is not a permit holder so is plying his trade illegally (just like a fancy unlicensed taxi cab really) but we can ignore that cos the cyclists is probably a pot smoking leftie hippy on benefits. Or something.

    4) Profit!!

Please stop looking at the facts, the law and reality. Keep the hate focused on cyclists otherwise there is no point in having these cyclist bashing threads is there?

Not sure what everyone else saw but around the 2.30mark he definitely pulled the left hand horse's head to the left and into the cyclist.

Not a good way to treat an animal. I'd be sending the footage to the RSPCA because if he's prepared to use his horses as a weapon what else does he do to them.

I posted the article because it was ironic that we have another road user slower than the cyclists and the cyclists are complaining.

While the camera cyclist seemed to obey the rules there was another cyclist who overtook and was very close to jumping the red, what if there was a motorist running the orange/red.

If you read the whole article, it stated that the carriages have to have a permit to pick up from where-ever they are supposed to pick up. However it also stated that some carriages are booked directly by individual hotels and the council has no jurisdiction. So the carriage may not have been illegal, even if he is a tool. I guess if the cyclist didn't confront the carriage at a point when the carriage was on the road lane, it may not have deteriorated. But I doubt it, he is a horsey person and my experience of them is that many are basically the same.

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

Or perhaps you could see it as another example of a road user who thinks they know the law and their rights (but who is so staggeringly ignorant of them) and, who uses their larger vehicle to bully a smaller road user.

I found it interesting, in the video, that the cyclist showed all due care and consideration as the cyclists expect from other road users.

If you observe cyclists in the city, as I was doing today, you soon realise red lights are advisory.

Sit at any intersection in the Perth metro area and you'll find motorists, truckies etc who think the same. Pedestrians certainly do the same for pedestrian crossings in the city as well.

You can make the same argument against any subset of the population depending how you want to divide them, car brand, gender, age, bearded, not bearded etc.

While on the subject of running red lights, right at the beginning of the video as the cyclists approaches the very first set of lights you will notice they are green as he approaches yet a car is being driven through the junction in conflict with the green lanterns shown.

This can only mean that the driver ran a red light from whichever direction he came from. Given the apparent speed I doubt very much that he went through on a green and didn't have time to complete the maneuver during the amber phase.

    Just saying.

14 pages of argy bargy and I'll bet nobody's changed their views on the cyclist issue.
Lots of spleen venting, plenty of opinions both right and wrong, and the thread could go on forever.
Yep, some cyclists are dickheads, and some motorists are dickheads. Stupid to assume though that all cyclists and all motorists therefore behave badly.

Realistically vehicles and cycles will continue to coexist on our roads, registration of bicycles is unlikely ever to happen, and we should all take a powder and accept these facts, and be more tolerant and respectful of each other.

Now, how about we start a thread about 4wd's being used on city streets, especially if decked out with bullbars etc.

Or skateboarders damaging street furniture and riding too fast on footpaths

Or Santa not parking in designated Sleigh zones
