So, when I was looking up all this info, I can't actually see why the accident happened, as in what caused it.
Anyone able to shed some light on it for me please?

There was bugger all evidence left but it is believed that the truck was carrying drum(s) of diesel. One of the drums started to leak. The driver must have become aware of the leak and had removed his personal belongings from the truck. A cockie noticed the truck stopped and sent his son to see if the driver needed a hand. The driver saw the fellow close to the truck and presumably returned to the truck to warn him to stay clear. That's when it went up, killing them both.
    That's the version I heard.
If you don't like trucks, stop buying stuff.

Memorial erected to the victims of the truck explosion which occured near Stonecroft Station in 1972. The Taroom Historical Society and members of the victims families erected the memorial at the site of the accident.

In 1972 Ronald John Holzberger, Evan Parker Becker and Douglas Thomas Becker were killed when a semi-trailer carrying ammonium nitrate exploded on Fitzroy Development Rd. The explosion destroyed the prime mover and trailer, leaving a crater in the road two metres deep, five metres wide, 20 metres long and left two families reeling.

Parts of the truck and trailer were scattered up to two kilometres away. The explosion was heard and shook houses 88km away in Moura and 55km away in Theodore.
V8 Ian, You have the incident... but I did ask for the station it happened at... so Going bush wins again....

Sorry if I gave too many clues, I wasn't sure if anyone would actually get it and I didn't want to be that person who drags it on too long!

Are you running out of places to post yet GoingBush?

That is roughly the version I heard, although less detailed... I heard truck carrying diesel and Ammonium nitrate, diesel leaked and some sort of ignition source did the rest.

According to some of the plarks up around the monument, they are still finding bits of truck around the area.....

In another incident in Sept 2014 near Charleville, a truck carrying over 50 tonnes of ammonium nitrate rolled over, resulting in eight people injured and two bridges, a section of highway, the truck and two fire engines being either destroyed or seriously damaged.

I actually have hi res pics on my computer at work. The rail bridge shows the force of the explosion.
