Most of them from that time period were but they can be easily 'flashed' when converting to -ve earth.

If you're just using it as a charger, as long as the only contact is the leads, it should make no difference. Pos to pos and neg to neg. Make sure the genny is 12V, not 6V.

I had one, they're pretty flimsy or maybe I'm too heavy handed.

I have a toledo brand cable tie gun. It can get the ties tighter that I can by hand, but fails on ties wider than approx 5mm. The little cutter runs out of steam and won't finish the cut.

The parrot beak vise grips are great for getting a solid clamp on a nut- without burring it. I think irwin calls it a 'locking wrench'.
It's great for rounded or damaged nuts, and it's good because it grips on 3 sides. Also works great on flare nuts.
I've never actually tried it for crimping... but it would be interesting to give it a go and see how it goes!

I also have a small pair of long nose vise grips, which are great for removing spring clamps and other fiddly stuff that needs to be held. I used it to keep wiring still while soldering it the other day. Nifty.
