Surely in cases like this and many others where there is 110% chance of getting it right without ANY chance of an innocent being punished the death penalty should apply.

Well actually it depends who you consider the Government is - to me it is the elected MPs - the public service is that - the public service and work for whoever is in Government and only administer the legislation.

In this case the breach of security was reported to the AFP by the Secretary of the Department of Defence - solely because classified material had been compromised.

Re the leaks, the issue is that the stolen or leaked secret material is material that the public should know about, and the secrecy laws are being used to shield wrong-doing.

As Incisor indicated (I think), this issue is not about a particular party or politician, it's about accountability.
Should a government, any government from any party, have the power to prevent the media from revealing credible claims that government representatives have committed serious crimes, in the ABC case murder, or want to spy on the people who elected them? That's what this is about.
If this was in Current Affairs I could say a lot more, but I won't because I'm trying to stay within the rules.

I certainly think the people should know if the government is secretly plotting to spy on them, or if government employees murder unarmed innocent women and children.

I liked the attitude of a judge in one of the US southern States who refused to try citizens who had been apprehended for using a traffic radar detector. He believed that in a democracy the citizens had a right to know if their government was engaged in covert surveillance of the citizens.

No surprises,....it's still going on, getting worse actually.
What I've been saying all along is "no deterrents"" which is EXACTLY what is being said by the officers working in the Malmsbury & other youth detention centers.
Officers are being brutally attacked,....but nothing happens to the perpetrators,.....and they (perpetrators) KNOW nothing of a seriously inconvenient nature will happen to them, so they keep doing it.
