No don't start that way of thinking, we will all be doing 30kph if the hand-wringers hear that. I can have fun and ride safely below the speed limit. It's all about knowing your limits. Don't legislate for the lowest common denominator...that is how we have gotten to the cotton-wool condition the human race is in now.

I wonder if the current mania about 5 star vehicles that are supposedly safe has anything to do with it.
The wonderful air bag videos are at 60KMH.

If two vehicles crash head on at 100Kmh most if not all of the occupants are dead or dreadfully disfigured.

The "Nanny State" constantly reinforces how you will be safe in new vehicles but doesn't make any mention of "if you are going 60KMh"

The most ridiculous thing is that from next year no vehicle can be 5 star without stability control. It's just packing expensive stuff into cars for no gain.
I recall that one car missed a 5 star rating because it didn't have a little light to tell the passenger to fasten his/her seat belt.

Yet here are many particularly young people texting away at 100kmh happy in the knowledge that they are in a "safe" car. And the number of young girls particularly who love having their feet on the dashboard is scenic though frightening if you have any imagination.

    30km/h!! Are you mad?
How would you cope if a tortoise sprinted out in front of you?

In today's weekend West there is a story of a bloke who has lost his license 12 times in 11 years,in 2006 he run over and killed a 6 year old girl after testing 3 times over the blood alcohol limit. Pat

Yes the technological aids award the stars now not the actual crash test. I've seen the results of a 2 star vs 5 star crash and believe me I'll choose the 2 star sedan over a small 5 star... I've mentioned it in post #36.

The Foxhow road in Victoria has been permanently restricted to 60kph or even 40kph in winter due to rough edges on the single lane bitumen road but the trucks go through at 100kph. Interestingly no police are out there but it'd be so easy to fine people as one gets sick of driving 5km with no other car in sight. Must be cheaper to put up signs than to fix the road that's been neglected for over 10 years.

Although 60kph is probably pretty fast for most European cars with 20" rims that are not designed for our potholed roads... The Land Rovers love it!

    Ah, Foxhow Road.
To quote what is often asked of me by citycenric friends, "Do they have roads out there?"
Now, instead of rising, I just reply, "We did have, once."

    Unbelievable.

He's forfeited his right to walk felt amongst the rest of us, he has no respect for anyone else, he needs to do some serious time inside.

Sad but very true. Although I do find it's still quicker to get to Geelong from Warrnambool via Foxhow despite the speed restrictions than via Colac.
