    From the article:

Germany has long promoted diesel to help cut carbon dioxide emissions and meet climate change goals, but the country now fears a shift away from the combustion engine could endanger hundreds of thousands of jobs.
Oh, and great, another unenforceable rule:
Germany's police union warned it did not have capacity to enforce any bans.

    From the article...

Diesel cars were first invented in Germany and remain a popular alternative to gasoline-powered vehicles, with about 12 million affected vehicles on the road.

    Hmmm...bit of irony there.

    Might not be all doom.....

Matthias Wissmann, head of the German automakers' association VDA, called on cities to carefully weigh what measures would be most effective in reducing harmful emissions.

He noted that the cleanest diesel cars, which meet the so-called Euro-6 standard, wouldn't be affected by driving bans.
Analysts said the verdict might actually prove to be a boon for the economy if consumers who rely on their cars choose to upgrade their engines or buy a new model.

"German auto manufacturers have already started offering rebates for exchanging older diesel cars for new models,'' said Thomas Strobel, an economist at UniCredit Bank in Munich.
