The fact he wanted to do it to keep his fish fresh makes this guy a legend plus for me

The biggest commercial freezer works in Geelong reduced their power bill by at least 30% (might have been 50%) about 15 years ago when they were legally allowed to use ammonia again.

I knew a couple of people who worked admin there. DL

You did well if that fixed it,some used the heater safety klixon, in the evaporator,to power the defrost timer, during the cooling cycle.
If the sensor was shagged, the timer wouldnt go.
But the timer would be powered if turned, during the actual defrost cycle, only to stop when it clicked off the cycle, losing power again.

Most,if not all Jap fridges were wired this way,Mitsy,Hitachi, etc.Only some F&P were like this, not all.

No Aus fridges were wired this way.

Thanks Paul. Spent a bit of time on the net getting my head around the whole thing and looking at the parts diagrams to confirm this.

I could tell in the end that it was the timer, and not one of the two failsafe fuses related to the heater element, or the element itself, just by manually manipulating the timer and seeing and hearing what happened.

Timer assembled in Mex was $35 ish compared with $150 ish for supposed genuine, which F&P don't make anyway.

Coincidentally......... fixed a 1000kg vertical cable hoist 2 days ago, 30min to figure it out and look at parts diagrams and 30 min to bend the bent switch rod bits back into shape and shorten the spring on each and adjust. Apparently a throwaway item at $300 these days. Dunno what I'll do with it.

    I kinda guessed that too.

The other thing that got me looking at the timer in the first place was coz it had the most moving parts.

The doors are distorted due people opening them from the top corners. New seals wouldn't fix this so each door has an over centre latch on it on the top corner. Yeah I know.........
so the fridge is kept in a locked shed.

Best thing is it works like new.

The freezer fan was replaced 2 weeks out of warranty way back when. The fridgie who did it said the original had a design fault. F&P would not come to the party.

    cheers, DL

    Doesn't that sound about normal?

I did have a chat with F&P at the time and their response was 'less than satisfactory', and I politely informed them that I wouldn't be recommending their products to anyone on my mega contact list.

    Made no difference.

Just onto our Insurer to question the heavy increase in our 2022 premium. They don't seem to give a **** either.

They seem to just send you the bills & expect you to pay them regardless.

    **** 'em!

It looks like the Embraer Private Jet, Bentley & the gold bullion will have to come off the policy. Bastards!

I reckon you must have spoken with an unauthorised minion who was making those decisions which were above his/her Pay Grade..

Oddly, I have only heard good things about them. Maybe they had a knock back that a.m.? It happens.

But still better than having to put the butter in the Lake to stop it turning into runny oil.

FWIW,some of those earlier domestics were belt drive,i cant remember the name of the cabinets,or what refrigerant they ran on,pretty sure it was before the good old R12?

They were & you can just imagine being around the thing in an enclosed kitchen when the shaft seal rubber **** itself. The good olde Purge Hose (remember those?) came into prompt use but killed the Clients gardens although putting it down the backyard sink drain did take care of most of it, I think.

I used a WW2 Gas mask, which while wasn't recommended for SO2 seemed to do the job if only for a short period until even that became saturated & then you drank gallons of milk which had a beneficial effect. I guess it stopped the Lungs bleeding to buggery?

Never came across any Methyl Chloride charges in Domestic Fridges thank goodness or I would have probably blown myself up.
