I bet you hotfooted it out of there then?

One or more of the vapourised steel Towers was built at Melrose Park cnr of Corunna or Marion Sts -ish on South Rd & at the time I thought it was to do with Oil Exploration but after reading Len Beadell's book with photo, it suddenly hit me what it was for. History in the making & I never even knew. That has to be a first, not.

Tower was aprox 6m x 6m, x sort of 100' high-ish & probably had to be disassembled for transport to Mara then glued back together ready for the bomb. I don't recall which of Len's books it was mentioned in & I have read them all, as well as the one where he went on his Overseas Jaunt & visited his surveying equipment manufacturer in the UK. That one was called "Around the World in Eighty Delays", one of his last if not the last.
May have been "Blast the Bush"?????

Cue "Being hit with a steel tower" jokes.

Was on the train in the old world when this was possible and was chatting to the person beside me. He had spent some of his youth in the British Navy which had sent him to a lot of interesting places. The one which stands out for this story is a stint in Woomera. He was an engineer of some sort and worked on desalination equipment on the boats.

So how did someone from the British navy end up in the desert in Australia which is a long way from what would normally be considered the natural environment for the navy? Seems this type of equipment was an area of specialization that was reserved for the navy. So anywhere it was required it was the navy who were sent to set up and run the equipment

Friend of my father spent at least a year there as well. He was doing National Service in the Australian Army and this was where was sent. Still talks about his time there. Reckons it was a great place for a young bloke. All that cutting edge technology and he as a young pleb right in among it and given responsibility at a level that was well above pay grade. Seems there are few things in life as exciting as firing off a large rocket
