On a recent Alice Springs trip my Cruiser worshipping mate had to refuel at $3.70. The economical Td5 had more than enough fuel to get to a more realistic $2.20, despite the 60% fuel capacity of the Toyota

Maybe, but I don't live in a remote part of the country! It is only half a day from Sydney and only 50km from one of Australia's biggest inland towns.

I can't remember the price, but on my first trip up through the Centre in 1964, I remember that at Tenant Ck you had to double the price shown on the pump, because the pump could not be set high enough!

On the subject of economy though, worth noting that I usually would have gone to pick up the mail in the petrol 2a, but chose the County this time because I was going a bit further afield as well, and it has cruise control. When I left home I had no intention of getting fuel. The County does a lot better fuel economy than the 2a, but also does a lot more kilometres - it is my "town car", the 2a rarely drives off the property.

Coupla days ago I was in Canterbury Road, Kilsyth. Anyone who knows Melbourne will know this is not "remote". The large yellow coloured chain station had $2.29. About a kilometre, maybe less, away was a united. $1.89. And yet people were still buying at the mollusc.

Well I have been avoiding visiting this thread. It is like the motto written above some doors - "Abandon all hope yea who enter here". Once you step across the threshold there is no return... Well something I experienced yesterday trigger the thought - where else in the world could I comment about what just happened. So unless you Grumpy Old Buggers turf me out ... here I am!

I live on a road that is just off a main thoroughfare. Well for Bundaberg the place in question does represent one of our main thoroughfares. One slip lane branches off to the left and leads me to the road I live on. The centre road continues on straight ahead. The third lane which is off to the right links to the Ring Road. My left-hand slip lane also coincides with being directly in front of one of the little shopping centres in this area of town.

I was about the third car in the line to enter the slip lane. I noticed two cars in front of me swing suddenly off to the right and back into the straight ahead lane. Therefore I was alerted to some form of hazard on the road. What I saw simply beggared belief. Hence my knocking on this thread's door. There standing in the middle of the slip lane was the young female with her head down focussing on her mobile as she was apparently waiting for a gap in the traffic so they could cross the road! When I mean 'in the middle of the slip lane', I reckon that if you measured the area with a theodolite and staff you could not have found a more accurate place within the slip lane as being 'in the middle of'. There was only the very very occasional upward glance towards oncoming traffic. The vast majority of their attention was on their mobile.

If myself and the other drivers were not paying attention we would have been able to achieve any of the person's aspirations about being a model. We could of allowed them to fulfil their dreams by their becoming an ornament on our car's bonnet. The most frustrating aspect of this person's rampant stupidity is that the driver that collected them would be charged with negligent driving causing either harm or death. Apparently there is no law about rampant stupidity. I suppose our already crowded gaols would be even more bursting at their rims if there was one.

I suppose there would be one aspect to consider regarding if the person in question became a hood ornament on a Mack truck instead of just a sedan. At least they would not contribute to the gene pool. Is that too grumpy a thing to write?

Okay, Guys do I fit the entrance requirements for me to join this thread - or do I have to try harder?

Funny you mention this, Lionel. My wife has just returned from a drive through Mt. Mee and whilst following a bloke on a motorcycle down the windy road, he reached into his back pocket, took out his phone, looked at it and then stopped in the middle of the road to read the message he received.

Last time I saw the stats for the UK which was a few years ago people on their phone or with ear plugs in listening to something had become the biggest category of pedestrian ‘victims’ of road accidents. They had beaten out drunk to top place. Drunk used to be there with nearly 50% of places.

Changes reflect the modern world. Unfortunately the messaging by those who are responsible is not focused on this rather on children who while should not be there are actually a small part of those impacted but no doubt are an easier sell to the public

A friend who is in the police rides a bike a lot which is I think a stress release. Used to have ear phones in on ear listening to music to keep himself in the zone. Has stopped doing this as noticed that many accidents with bikes they were wearing ear phones. When on a bike you need all your senses and wearing ear phones removed on and is distracting in a way it is not in a car. No longer wears them when riding and believes it has made a big difference to how they ride and are aware of their surroundings
