The genetic information of cov-SARS-2 (according to papers I have seen summaries of), shows it is very closely related to a coronavirus endemic in bats in the Wuhan area, but not quite close enough to be a direct transfer from bat to human - it would have had to have been transferred to another species first, and from that species to humans. The pangolin has been suggested as the intermediary, but I have seen no evidence to confirm this, and as far as I can tell this would only be a guess until the virus or one very close to it is isolated from another species. In view of the number of possible species, this is not likely to happen soon, and I doubt it is an area of urgent research.
