Yes, I'm aware of that.
The International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses has an informative article on the naming of the coronavirus:
International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV)
The following table is what I'm getting at:
"Naming the 2019 Coronavirus"
The virus causing the current outbreak of coronavirus disease has been named "severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2" (SARS-CoV-2). The manuscript describing the name also reports the work of the ICTV Coronaviridae Study Group (ICTV-CSG) that determined the virus belongs to the existing species, Severe acute respiratory syndrome-related coronavirus.
So, if SARS-CoV was called SARS why isn't SARS-CoV-2 called SARS-2?
Simply because that naming falls to WHO and they didn't want to cause a panic by making it clear that SARS was back.
In point of fact they even refuse to refer to the virus by its correct ICTV name - they refer to it obliquely as:
“the virus responsible for COVID-19”
Shades of "he who must not be named". They've managed to remove "SARS" from both the name of the virus and the disease it causes.
And why? Because, from the WHO page you linked to:
"From a risk communications perspective, using the name SARS can have unintended consequences in terms of creating unnecessary fear for some populations, especially in Asia which was worst affected by the SARS outbreak in 2003. For that reason and others, WHO has begun referring to the virus as “the virus responsible for COVID-19” or “the COVID-19 virus” when communicating with the public. Neither of these designations are intended as replacements for the official name of the virus as agreed by the ICTV."
It was when I was working on this stuff in late January this year that it became clear that WHO is very much as political as medical.

I must confess that when this Virus was announced I concede I did. I really did think along the lines of "WHO?. They'll get this bugger sorted". Then the brown stuff hit the whirly thing. I mean, an organisation funded by many Govts & dedicated to look after World Health.
What could possibly go wrong?
I know better now & COVID-19 was an eye opener for me & probably to many people not in the know as well.
Naive? Moi?
I see Queensland will decide soon if it will open its borders on July 10. So the Premier will be watching to see if there is a second wave of infections in NSW and Queensland.
There are anti-racism protests tomorrow, while NSW is allowing the NRL to bring fans into football stadiums from next week. So that can only increase the chances of a second wave of infections later this month.
So that could be interesting.
The Sydney protests are still going ahead, 3-5pm at the Town Hall, with social distancing, masks and hand sanitiser, with many thousands of people confirming online tonight that they still intend to attend, despite the court decision.
Protests are also planned in Melbourne, Adelaide and Brisbane. I believe SA has given approval, not sure about the others. A protest was held in Canberra today, with a police presence.
The court's decision means the Sydney organisers have no legal protection, so they can't make arrangements with police to make the protests safer.
Last weekend 3000 people received police approval to protest against 5G/lockdown/vaccinations, and Morrison said it was 'their right to protest', but now it's not okay to protest against racism. Interesting priorities there, don't you think?
An outdoor protest should be safer than being indoors in a club, pub or footy corporate box. We'll soon know how many football fans, and people in pubs, get infected by the reopening of venues.
Then we'll know if other states and territories are willing to reopen their borders to NSW and Victoria.
Now that most States have lifted intrastate travel , i wonder how many people will now see the Grey Nomads & Caravans as other than a pain in the arse . The north of WA will welcome them to no end .
Blaming the WHO for slow response to covid-19 is misdirected. It seems that the 'Five Eyes" was warning governments of the coming pandemic in early January, perhaps even in December. So what is the excuse for the Australian government not closing borders until well into March? Or for the UK government waiting until June? Or for the US government to be saying in March it was just another flu? Don't these governments ever look at their intelligence briefings? And should they not use these rather than just rely on WHO?
