Is anyone else old enough to remember a TV show from the late 50s or early 60s that involved a duel between Wyatt Earp and someone else?
Earp had a revolver and the other bloke had a shotgun.
They both agreed to shoot at each other from about 50 or maybe even 100 metres. Both thought they were quite safe because the distance was well beyond the range of a shotgun and too far to expect to hit anything with a revolver.
While neither one hit the other, they both got a rude shock because the shotgun fired a solid slug (called a Brenneke slug, I think) and Earp's revolver was his long barrel Buntline Special, supposedly more accurate over longer distances than standard revolvers.
So the moral of the story is before you nominate the range, make sure you know what weapon or projectile you are facing.
