you been talking to your state and federal members? directly or via a concerned group ?

a group i assist, in other ways, have helped in similar circumstances with out all this drama, that is why i took extra interest in this story. they are mostly politically aware people but i know it can be done if approached correctly...

i hope it works out for you...

We are approaching both directly, plus members of the State opposition. I’ve also recently been given contact details for some “higher ups” in WA health, and the children’s hospital as the next cage to rattle. I’d love to be able to say “it’ll all be ok”, but as we found with our first couple of weeks in Vic, all the assurances in the world are worthless when the Health Dept makes a sudden mandate and the underlings charged with enforcing it make “from the hip” decisions based on a loose direction.

My point was we’ve already been done over 3 times by snap COVID based decisions, and conflicting organisations either side of a border (WA, Vic & Malaysia). Sure, maybe the couple with the kid in the news are being used as political pawns, but just maybe they’ve been screwed by a couple of health systems and are using the media as a last resort to solve a problem.

The other option is they are being used to sell papers.

I think the one thing we can all agree on is our (as in Australians) response to COVID has been sub-optimal and there are lessons to be learned. Unfortunately track record would suggest we won’t learn them or they’ll be leveraged to fiddle budgets and/or buy votes.

even if they could only use someone down there, surely to hell you would have lined up the ducks before the event if you knew you were doing it and got assurances etc, not just dash off in the middle of such a an event to a spot with higher infection rates to start with and then just blindly hope your right to go....

the borders and restrictions have been in place for ages.
From what's been reported this is just one of a number of instances of bureaucratic walls where it looks like exceptions should be made.
Similar things are happening on the NSW/Vic border, as is certain people allowed to home quarantine but everyone else must hotel quarantine.
Just because it's always been like that doesn't mean it's right
Living in the Northern Rivers its front and centre, it's a real topic of conversation as it's affected doctor numbers at Lismore Base, etc.
I'll try and ask a friend that is a midwife there what's going on from her perspective.

From what I read last week this was a real sticking point between the Feds and State Premier's.

I've never ever had to do laps of the carpark to look for a spot in 20yrs living here...

Its pis**in with rain, pea size hail, windy as **** - I thort there'd be nobody stupid enough to go out in this ****- how wrong I was.. talkin to butcher he hasnt seen it this busy since Xmas... Whole families - The rules currently say 1 per family (or similar)

I hope IM wrong, but looks like everyone has seen the low numbers, and thinks SNAFU.. lets all go out.

Really? Where was that? I went for a walk on Friday evening and a walk yesterday afternoon in the rain and I saw no such thing. And I live in the inner-city with thousands of people in the new apartment blocks going up everywhere.

What I did see was people keeping their distance from everyone and in the last few weeks I've seen just one person not wearing a mask - and I pointed that out to him.

Oh, and you can take your kids shopping with you if the alternative is leaving them at home by themselves, which would be the case for lots of single parents.

The masked singer ffs ..... No way is that piece of **** show an essential service!

And I love the veiled racism ..... Lalor .... Oakleigh ...... Northern Suburbs .... to put it in context for non-Melburnians, those are suburbs with heavy post-war migrant populations, including ethnic and racial groups that have arrived more recently. In contrast, the apparent breaches that I'm personally aware of are happening in the nice, Anglo, wealthy Eastern suburbs.

And Channel 9 is Sydney based so maybe that's why they're putting Oakleigh in the Northern suburbs when it's 20kms south of the City.

Edit: and therefore 20 - 30 kms away from the Northern Suburbs.

That or "been here & done that before again, I'm ok Jacque"?

On a similar matter, someone on her recently put forward the thought that insisting on Hotel Quarantine was putting "lost" revenue back into the pubs. It does make me wonder as well. Mostly it won't come from Govt Coffers as it was initially. So a Win Win, but not for the unemployed & skint folk now.

It's rife in the wealthy seaside holiday house / resort towns on both sides of the bay, especially on weekends.

Its certainly a hard situation. At first glance it looks bad, but maybe there is more to it.

If the child has recovered from surgery to be well enough to travel then, from a health viewpoint, would she be any worse off in a hotel than at home? I see Qld Health has said medical support would be available in the hotel. It would certainly be nicer though to recover at home, that's true.

Go to the opposite extreme and what's the worst that could happen? The child and/or parents were infected in Sydney, bring it into Qld, spread it around, numerous people get sick and some die.

Is it worth the risk to avoid the inconvenience for the family of 14 days in hotel quarantine?

    Hard decisions.

I would outwardly appear you have no idea about the complexities involved in getting treatment when the location you live doesn't have the particular doctor you need at the time.

It was your situation that was at the back of my mind when I read about the NSW/QLD cases.

Hopefully by the time you are able to go home Vic will have eliminated the virus - I expect we'll be in Stage 3 or 4 until Christmas in order to achieve that. That should make the transit back to WA a little easier.
