My point is that if immunity (regardless of method aquired) only lasts 6~12 months, herd immunity will never be achieved.
When people refer to “herd immunity” - usually about 70% of a population - they are usually referring to achieving it by vaccination, not infection.

If we achieved 70% vaccination in Australia for six months the virus would disappear because it wouldn’t have any hosts to spread in.

Can't see that happening unless we totally isolate from the fest of the world. The practicality of no international air traffic or shipping simply won't work. We would run out of fuel in under a month, then the country will grind to a halt.

Yes, reinfection from OS would be an issue, but if everyone here is vaccinated it can’t spread widely.

Does anyone know if the currently developed vaccines are all effective against the various strains?

70% won't cut it for this virus - like measles it needs a higher percentage because it is so infectious, probably 80-90%. Measles needs close to 95%, it all depends on the effective R0.

I was going to ask, 'Are people really that stupid?' and then realised that that would be stupid.

No COVID respite for NSW as 2020 comes to a close.

"The Croydon cluster is concerning because there's no established link," Premier Gladys Berejiklian said on Wednesday.

3 new cases in Victoria, reportedly from NSW.

Coronavirus: Melbourne records new cases after two months virus-free (msn.com)

The question is, if Sydney had followed the Melbourne example, would they have contained it. ? A leading epidemiologist has said the decision to play the cricket at the SCG is based on emotion, not health advice. Is the NSW government trying to prove a political point , putting the health of their citizens at risk? All questions that must be asked.
Did the three positive infections in VIC. from NSW come from regional NSW? This is slowly turning into a fiasco.
I’m pretty sure the dinosaurs died out when they stopped gathering food and started having meetings to discuss gathering food
