    Here is a podcast from the New York Times " why herd immunity is slipping away". The emergence of more contagious variants of the virus has changed the herd immunity calculation. Whereas it once was thought to be 6o% to 70 % of the population , the number now stands at 90% to 95%. This podcast talks about can herd immunity ever be achieved, and ,what would it be like in a country where it didn't exist.? Obviously this is about the USA.

    Another podcast from the New York Times, the rise of Delta. Current vaccines protect against delta, but they may come too late for countries with slow vaccination drives. What can be done to stop delta, and how will the variant hamper global efforts to return to normalcy? From the NYT.;
    EDIT Australia gets a mention in this.

    It looks like some in the NSW government want to give up on beating the virus and just let it run its course.

    ‘Fork in the road': Senior ministers consider letting Delta circulate in community (msn.com)

    IF this happens I would imagine that NSW will be locked out of Every other State So instead of whinging about a lockdown they will be whinging about not being able to leave the State.

    Yep, the selfish apathetic people who are still out there circulating will be the ones complaining loudest also when it could potentially be a matter of 2 weeks of pain and we're good to go again, and it will also be them saying the government didn't do enough. This is now the responsiblity of the community, there is nothing the government can do at this point unless people do the lockdown. Thanks a million to those ****wits that keep travelling out here also.
    Cheers

    Those Ministers have probably been fully vaccinated. And most probably have business assets losing money right about now. It's all about priorities. Money over people, it seems sometimes.

    I never did see any analysis on the Melbourne issues, whether it was insufficiently draconian lockdown measures or a demographic specific issue that led to some areas having difficulty stopping creeping transmission. Maybe there will be some tougher restrictions in specific local government areas to control the spread?

    Are you talking about the spread that lead to the big lockdown? Because there were no issues with compliance - other than with a couple of nutcases - during lockdown 2.0.

    The wealthy (including politicians and many in the fulltime work force) are simply ignorant of the hardship that so many who live in the gig economy are facing - they have no job security, no financial reserves, no sick leave, no holiday pay, because they are on casual contracts.

    Huge numbers of people were not eligible for job keeper and now the emergency support on offer is at rates below the poverty line / minimum wage. …what are they all supposed to do? They can’t afford to just stay home in lock down.

    The economy during the pandemic is rapidly splitting between rich and poor.

    Many frontline workers are employed under casual gig economy contracts, including nurses, teachers, aged care workers, quarantine workers, and everyone seems to have forgotten hospitality, the arts, universities, etc whose casual work force are all taken for granted by those who have fulltime / permanent jobs. Many others are in jobs they can’t do from home. Add in real estate boom, rent increases, job losses and the massive mental health issues caused by being so devalued by society…

    The lack of equity in these lockdowns is being seriously underestimated by those in power. The people will have no choice but to rebel, ignore lockdowns, go to work. Seriously what does everyone expect will happen when half the population is not properly supported through this?
