Is that why Centrelink has just cancelled payments to 9100 homeless people, and 74,000 Aussies in total, which seems a tad harsh during a recession with few jobs available?
The poor will be punished until morale improves, it seems.
Sorry mate, but the Centrelink you remember is not the organizsation it once was.

The money these people are getting comes out of the public purse (tax payers money) So what is so hard for people to meet these mutual obligations??
The dole is for people that are unfortunately out of work at the moment, It isn't meant to be "Sit down Money" or a " living wage" for people who can't be bothered looking for a job FFS

Well I’ll happily be one of the 20% then - Born in Stamford in Lincolnshire, England. Doubtful I’ll ever see the town where I was born. Came to Australia when I was 6 and I’m around 300KM from there now and won’t be moving anywhere closer than I am now.

It appears that many who posted in this thread are not aware of the reason Newstart Allowance (unemployment benefit) is paid. It is paid to unemployed persons to enable them to look for work according to their obligations. This is stressed in the training given to new officers at Centrelink and previously to DSS officers. Not paid to buy grog, groceries, tobacco, school fees, etc. etc. etc. etc. It is paid purely to enable the client to seek suitable work. It is regarded as a temporary or short term payment which is why it is paid at a lower rate than pensions which are regarded as long term payments. Persons are expected to use their own resources first. The Commonwealth is the payer of last resort. Example of this is Sickness Allowance applied for by a person who is employed. They are expected to use all their leave entitlements not just sick leave before becoming eligible for Sickness Allowance.
What, they’re not supposed to eat while looking for work?... I get the grog and fags, but groceries?

You are supposed to have other resources to tide you over a short period of unemployment. These are called "savings".

That is the stuff one saves if not ****ed up against the wall? Seems to me it is turning/turned into a "Live for Today thing & **** tomorrow".

How do you get savings if you're living under a bridge or in a doorway because Centrelink cut off your payments?
How does cutting off a homeless person's income because they missed an appointment help the homeless person to find work when there are at least 13 unemployed people for each advertised vacancy?
It's just punishing the victims, I reckon.
