I'm fitting driving lights to the P38A. I recently bought a set of ball-ended hex drivers. I used one of them today to remove the covers off the lights.

The damn ball tip snapped off inside the socket head cap screw and it's stuck fast. To make it worse, it's flush with the outside face of teh screw.

The problem is that the socket head cap screw is recessed and there is no way to get a grip on it with pliers, etc. - and the screw is a tad too tight.

This means I can't open up the light to fit the wiring.

The ball broke off cleanly with very little applied force.

I had to butcher the light to get the screw out with vice grips. I may be able to get a replacement parts from Hella. They very kindly provided new cast metal bases for the lights when the original plastic bases snapped. The lights are Hella FF1000. The screw is inside the plastic surround (the red thing in this pic). I had to cut the surround off. It holds the back shell on to the cast housing.

Now how can I get it out? The screw is not a standard metric socket head cap screw but a self tapper.

heat the head until it glows then hold the thread with pliers and wack the head it on a steel bench.
