Thread: AULRO Subscriber Offer - cheap on-road/off-road GPS units

I started with the original Ranga 5" screen which is fine for turn by turn navigation using iGo but too small for me running OziExplorer so I got the 7" screen.
7" used in Defender running iGo and OziExplorer and the 5" unit used in the small run around car.

I got one of the units awhile back and you did the software for me. Is there any IGO updates that can be put on. If there is how do i go about getting these updates on my system.

Last update I have is February 2010. This includes the new Gateway, but not the tunnels.

I have a small screen gps for on road use but I don't have any experience of off road units. Is there much difference in the units from deal extreme,ie better manufacturers? Is a faster processor of any benefit, what is the consensus regarding best screen size, ie is there a benefit in a small light unit or larger screen, and when is it best to go to a netbook.

To be honest, the 5" is fine for on-road use, and adequate for off-road, but with the raft of new tablet PC's coming out this year, I think I'll be upgrading to one of those for off-road and touring. I'd probably go an iPad now, except they're too expensive for what you get, and the mapping software (see Bit Map) is a bit immature.

Question DX GPS units - voice accents

I am going to bite the bullet and get one of the DX units, finally. Been putting it off for a while but now the time has come.
Does it make any difference, for the spoken turn by turn commands, which maps are supplied with the unit? I mean for the accent of the voice. I don't want an annoying US accent. Australian or English is much better.
There seems to be so many units from DX to choose from. Thought I might as well get some Australian maps to start with but also want AV in to run a reversing camera too, on a 5" screen. I know a few of you are doing this too, so would appreciate some comments about the voices.

For a sure bet, just stick with the one linked on my first post. I can help you out with maps (or probably plenty of other can too). Australian accents are available.

I tried several of the supplied voices and ended up using English Kate.

It has been about 18 months since we got our GPSs so I guess it is time to do some upgrading.

The 5" version I have works really well and lives in my 101 where it has been bounced around a bit and has done more than has been expected of it but some upgrades of the software would be nice. I have upgraded Oziexplorer CE to the latest version and would also like to up grade Tom Tom and IGO

I have IG08 (version 1.0) so is it worth upgrading to a another version etc. If yes where would I find it.

Maps for IGO - have looked at GPS Underground :: Your Tracks Guide but that site is complex and the few links I have tried have not worked. What are the latest files I should be looking to update Maps, POIs, Safety Cameras etc. Igo is good to use but the maps I have are now quite out of date.

Ditto for Tom Tom - I have no idea what version I have and I cannot find where the maps are stored (can someone tell what folder they live in). The Tom Tom maps I have are much more up to date than the Igo8 ones but are also getting a little out of date.

Any pointers or links in GPS underground or elsewhere that might be helpful would be appreciated.

    Thanks

Regarding the IPAD option, as I understand it, the GPS functionality operates by connecting through the mobile network, ie its SIM card. So does this mean when you are out of mobile phone range, you also lose the GPS function?

    cheers

iPad and iPhones use Assisted-GP which uses the location of phone towers to increase the speed and accuracy of the GPS.

So they can work without Mobile Phone reception but they are quicker with it.
