Hi Disco4pilot,
Well done for making the move and being the test pilot (no pun intended).
Looking forward to your full report.
Cheers, Craig
Interesting. This has been round for a little while but not many have invested. So is it correct the factory monochrome screen plays through the colour screen?
Cheers Rob

Hey Rob, no the factory monochrome screen does not play through it (like it does on the Russian one that I also looked at and is on YouTube) it actually replaces the monochrome screen and performs the same functions (sends and displays the information to the main factory stereo unit) You adjust the radio tuning, audio settings (balance, fader, treble, base etc) and the system time all through the new display using its GUI (graphical user interface). So all the old functions (minus the old phone) work through the new screen along with all the new functions (including a new Bluetooth phone function that uses a new mic).To be honest I was actually really (pleasantly) surprised at how they were able to so seamlessly integrate the factory system with the new features. I could try and take a video on the iPhone and put it up here if you (or anyone) is interested. (anyone know who to use to host a video?)
Thanks Craig I figured with baby number two coming next month my time available to play in the car is going to be rather reduced soon!
Ok more on this than my last (cheeky) reply.
When I first looked at this I thought the GUI (I assume thats what you mean by graphics as the video playback is as good as any 7inch display from a DVD) wasn't that pretty as well but I looked into it a bit more and the button design and colour scheme is actually the same as on the high end factory system. They have copied the factory GUI to make it look the same as Land Rover intended. It actually looks good in the dash and is simple and easy to use whilst driving. My previous GPS was a Chinese Double din in a GQ patrol and it had quite a fancy GUI that looked good but was very difficult to adjust whilst underway and didn't look factory.
Cheers guys
Pete
What this is, disclaimer etc

You can see that the new screen replaces the old screen and there is a DVD player in the top glove box. The cable between the screen and the DVD player is long enough to put the DVD player under the passenger seat if you don’t want to loose your glove box.
What it does.
This unit replaces the old non-touch screen with a 7inch touch screen. It uses the original radio tuner and cd player which can be controlled with the touch screen and the original buttons. As far as I can tell all the functions that used to be controlled and displayed on the original display can be controlled and displayed on the new display with the exception of the Telephone function. The unit includes its own Bluetooth telephone control and a separate mic needs to be installed on the A pillar. The original Bluetooth is still installed and operates although I do not know how easy (or if possible) it would be to change phones once this is installed. In my situation I use the new Bluetooth for my phone and my wife uses the old Bluetooth for hers (there is no call info display for the old Bluetooth and I don’t know if she will be able to re-pair her phone if it looses its connection, I’ll update this if I find out). The factory Bluetooth is clearer than the new Bluetooth but the new Bluetooth supports music streaming so it’s a bit of a trade off.
It has the following features – Taken from the marketing material with my comments added.
· 7-inch digital touch screen resolution:800*480 – I haven’t had the chance to try in strong full sun (we haven’t had much of that in Sydney) but it has a small amount shielding and my car has window tinting so think it should be easy to view. There is a button in the bottom left of all the screens that turn the screen off for night driving. (Great feature!)
· All functions can be controlled with the touch screen AND THE FACTORY BUTTONS BOTH ON THE STEARING WHEEL AND THE CENTER CONSOLE
· Car system time can be changed on the touch screen and is displayed on the instrument cluster
· DVD/CD/VCD/CD/CD-R/CD-RW/MP3/MP4/DivX on an external DVD player that is mounted in the glove box or under the passenger seat.
· Multimedia playback from SD card or USB drive – not sure of max hard drive size my guess is it would be small as this is usually the case. I think it might be limited to FAT32 size but might be wrong.
· Factory radio with touch screen and original control
· Factory CD with touch screen and original control
· Bluetooth music and phone, can control iPhone (only phone tested) but does not display song info. This replaces the factory Bluetooth. Not as clear but still functions well. I haven’t been able to get my address book on the touch screen but haven’t really tried as my phone is in a cradle (proclip) on the dash and I find the iPhone control easier to use and you can still use Siri. The answer and hang-up function on the steering wheel work with the new Bluetooth. See install for MIC location. The phone mutes audio as you would expect.
· GPS Built-in with a GPS dongle on the dash - Uses windows CE. You put the map software on a microSD card and then in the setting you direct the player to the correct file. It will then launch when you press the Navigation button. You can put multiple programs on the card and easily change the settings for different functions. The one I purchased came with igo8 and Australia maps installed (I have used igo8 before and love it) I will also install oziexplorerCE for off road nav. See install for GPS dongle location. If you look at the screen you can see a little plastic cover this covers a USB connector and the microSD card. Bellow it is the IR receiver. The turn by turn navigation comes out of a small included speaker (I put this in the top glove box but really it could be behind the dash as its not used much). I actually much prefer this (rather than through car speakers) as mostly I mute the voice anyway and just look at the directions. I don’t like the music stopping every time the voice tells me there is a turn ahead etc. It is still very audible from within the glove box so would be fine behind dash as well. IMHO
· Graphical User Interface – designed to look the same as the top spec factory option. It looks factory and is easy to see and operate.
· Steering wheel and center console control function. It works how you expect it too.
· PAL/NTSC system compatible (what doesn’t)
· Full function IR remote control – I don’t use it but its there..
· Image control function: Brightness/Contrast/Color/TINT
· Auto switching reverse camera – The big thing here is the speed it turn on. This is important as some of the ones I’ve seen if you jump in the car start it and put in reverse you are out of the drive before it starts up! This one is quick enough to be useful. The system only takes a few seconds to start up (whilst starting it shows a nice land rover logo and a status bar) and the camera is shown as soon as reverse is selected. The one I purchased included a number plate light mounted camera. I had already purchased a better quality one so installed this rather than the one given. My advice would be to try the free one and if you don’t like it put in a new one just make sure the connectors can be pulled through the hole in the number plate so you don’t have to pull apart the boot again!
· Auto-save all parameter and last memory function – If you were listening to radio when you turn off the car it will start back on radio, same with DVD and all other functions.
· Built-in HP/LP filter, EQ (wow)
· Digital TV – OK so it says you can get this as a built in option but when I purchased it they said they couldn’t do built in but only external. I didn’t really need the TV function but I just decided to get it as part of the price negotiations. The external one works fine but you need to use a remote, as the touch screen doesn’t work. I will probably just disconnect the TV so I can use the AUX in function for my ipod and use the external TV receiver when (if) I put screens in the back for the kids.
· AUX IN – Audio and Video. I wired up RCA connectors in the top glove box next to the DVD player so I can plug in the digital TV box or anything else.
· Video Out – There are two of these I ran the RCA cables to the passenger seat along with RCA’s from the top glove box so I don’t have to take apart the dash again should I install rear seat screens in the future.
· IPOD – I can only get an ipod to work by plugging it into the AUX input by a 3.5mm plug. Some of these units advertise IPOD control the one I purchased didn’t. I have no idea if they work or not. I have always found that I turn ipod control off and use the ipod screen anyway as I’ve never found a control GUI that is easier to use than the apple interface.

Stay tuned

Thanks Disco4Pilot for the write-up.
Can I ask a couple of questions?
1) Does it come with instructions for how to route the wiring for the camera all the way to the back?
2) Around how long did it take you to do the full install?
3) When you press the "phone" button on the dashboard (not the touchscreen) then does this activate the factory bluetooth phone connection, or does it do the aftermarket one?
Cheers,
Edwin
Wow thanks Disco4 for the fantastic write up. This seems to be the answer to a lot of problems. I'm glad that it integrates with the time & date of the vehicle, that was a concern for me. I'll have a look at your eBay link again now that I'm home & start to negotiate a price.
Cheers Rob
1) It does not come with instructions to install the camera (the instructions on how to install are rubbish) but it doesn't matter as there are very good write ups available for the reverse camera and also how to take apart the Disco 4 dash. I'll try and write up an installation guide soonish. Here is a link to how to install a reverse camera. Its for Disco 3 but not much is different.
http://www.disco3.co.uk/gallery/albu...stallation.pdf
2) It took me about 4 hours maybe a little more not including the reverse camera but there was a bit of stuffing around trying to decide how I wanted to run the mic and GPS and also running cables for when I put rear seat entertainment in. Its quite hard to gauge how long the install will take as it is highly dependent on how quickly you work. If you were used to doing this sort of thing you could get it done in under an hour it's basically plug and play. With the install (and anytime you play with Disco 4 panels) it is highly likely that you will loose the metal clips that hold the trim together I lost a few and decided to leave them off an easy to remove panel and I'll get more clips next time I am at a dealer. As for the reverse CAM I did this at the same time as installing my fridge wires some time ago so all I had to do was connect an RCA plug. The installation guide I linked to says about 2 hours.
3) If you press the phone button on the dashboard it will bring up the new Bluetooth phone screen on the touch screen. The steering wheel buttons will also answer and hang up the new Bluetooth.
I look forward to reading how well the driver can see the screen for navigation, especially when using Ozi. I'm not about to replace my stand-alone 7" unit but anticipate that I'll be looking for a replacement sometime and the in-dash, original style is very appealing.
Thanks for the write-ups.

Yes, I did notice the first reply about the graphics was rather sarcastic!
The thing is you are correct. Your picture shows it looks a lot better than in the eBay ads. I already knew they were going for the factory look.
On the Bluetooth stuff, you said the factory Bluetooth still worked with your wife's phone. I take it that it only works using the phone's own buttons though now, as you have said the dashboard buttons now operate the new unit. Is that correct?
A bonus though that the steering wheel phone buttons now work - they don't in my standard 3.0 SE.
Also, where/how can I or anyone else "assist" you for your efforts & excellent leadership here? Living in Sydney & with a new baby coming, it must be expensive. I said I'd like to help & I would. What you have done removes a lot of risk & question for all who are interested. Well done.
Regards,
Les.
