I wish I could say it was something clever, but I just turn the suction mount so that it makes a backwards L shape and then tuck it under the rubber mat, the suction cup isn't even stuck on. It stays there pretty well believe it or not, very ocassionally it swings sideways a little if you take a corner to sharply but otherwise all good.

hahaha, damn I was thinking you had built or found a great little holder. At the moment I am keeping my tom tom in the windscreen right bottom corner tucked out of the way.
I will try the rubber mat idea and will order an ipad mount via ram mounts. May as well, my car won't be going anywhere for a while.

    Cheers,
    Ben

Probably not my cup of tea, but to be fair the first video was only the rough fitout. The final install is found in part two:

A word of caution - there is an airbag in that A pillar. Anything like a GPS mounted in front of it becomes a lethal projectile in a crash.

Good point Rob, that hadn't crossed my mind, I will make sure to put it back to the centre.

    Cheers,
    Ben

I mount my GPS in the cubby at the top centre of the dash between the air vaents similar to Andrew's Tom Tom. I have cut a piece of perspex out and put velcro strips on the perspex and the bottom of the cubby. When I want to use the GPS I just remove the rubber mat and attache the perspex to the velcro. the suction cup then sticks to the perspex. Has been pretty solid so far. Just grabbed a pic. The velcor does not show up to well unfortunately.
    Cheers

I did think of something similar, and didn't think it would actually work, so thanks I'll give that a shot.

What some of the guys in the UK have done is get the RRS sat nav surround and put a tomtom/navman into that position and wire it into the back as a permanent fixture, I did think of trying this but I like the storage spot for driving to work.

I've got a RAM suction mount on the centre of the windscreen (to avoid the side air bags) for a 7" GPS. Been there for >2 years and never fallen off.

RAM have a mount that expands into the cupholder. Might be the go?

    Ram mounts with iPad Mini

I recently installed a RAM mount for an IPad Mini in the D3.
The parts I purchased from Mr Mobile was the RAM TAB-TITE Cradle, The short double clamp and a diamond and a square base with 1" ball.

I made a piece of perspex to fit in the cubby and screwed it in on a downward incline with the square base attached. The picture below shows the square base and ball attached to the perspex in the cubby.

Then its a simple matter of attaching the short arm and the Tab Tite holder.

Here's the finished product when the iPad is inserted

I also made the Aux mod to the car and placed the 3.5 mm stereo jack next to the ciggie lighter socket which has a mini USB converter installed - So a 30 pin to USB and 3.5mm audio stereo cable and an apple Lightning to 30 pin adapter completes the setup.

All up I think it looks fairly neat.
