Been camping just north of Loxton over the weekend with limited phone service. Plus my iPhone decided that the long weekend while I’m away was a great time to fully restore itself to factory settings. Apparently I’ve been inviting a wind passcode while it was in my pocket. I’ve now turned off the ‘tap to wake’ function to prevent it happening again.

That young lady looks cold, but happy. Was it as brisk as it appears?

    Yep original engine and Gbox.

Turbos rebuild @ 260,000k but are being replaced with new (originals) as re build didnt work and leaking badly after a year. Was meant to be done last year but COVID.

So body off and second set of timing belts while at it.

Gbox original but i get some thumping on an off power sometimes (occasioanl very ordinary shifts, or no gear sometimes if punched hard). Could be Transfer Case?, Gbox or maybe the rear drive shaft and centre bearing. No faults anywhere...but gbox just may be on way out - (oil changed resonably frequenlty on the gbox)

new batteries a few weeks ago. Optima post broke off and decayed main crank Batt:

Well done. Are harsh shifts, that'll be the solenoids in the valve body being gunked up and the valve bodies bypassing / leaking so that they can't hold pressure. Put a sonnex zip gen 2 kit through it.

    1. Top radiator hose - in spite of asking for it to be checked/replaced.
    2. Gear selector module = truck ride.
    3. Today - transmission goes into neutral while driving along in ‘D’ or ‘S’. Roll to a stop. Put in ‘P’ and back into ‘D’ - and away it goes again for another 100/50/10/5/1/0.1 km until it does it again.

We are 330 km from home after a 2700 km trip - waiting for the tilt tray truck again.

Three trips for three breakdowns and two truck rides - time for a new vehicle!
My love affair with the D4 is back on!

Dropped cell in a 12 mth old battery! Replaced under warranty by RACQ. All good - no other charges by local LR dealer! Kind of weird - but there you have it!

I have spent the last week looking at potential replacements for the D4. Nothing comes close to it for ease of towing and effortless long range touring - except maybe a D5 or a new Defender, but I don't have much confidence in their reliability at this stage - waiting for the next models.

Thank God I don't have to buy a Cruiser!

    how hard to put in?

I am suspicious that its more than that... like T Convertor and or transfer case ...want to pull that out (enough to get grease on splines at least)

Mines like that at 260k full professional rebuild on valve body. When I pulled the TC to do the shaft greasing. The output shaft on the box was a bit wiggly for my liking. Plus. When I put it in Park she's got a fair old roll back before it takes up. For me. It's in the box. But it's been doing it for 100k now. I'll wait to it goes bang and get one from the local wrecker

Check the actuator rod on the side of the gearbox, this can affect where the TCM "thinks" park is. Wear in the entire system does add up to a fair bit of "slop" in final drive.

Pretty easy imho, I'd did mine in my garage, hardest part is getting the valve body out, the rebuild is easy, the Sonnax kit has lots of good info and clear instructions included.

TC locks up at 1200-1250rpm, so unless a lot of really slow driving, and having never changed fluid, unlikely.
