I gave up on normal bits.
Went and got 2 impact bits and used my impact driver.
    Sailed through the 4 holes.

    Today I tackled three projects:

Engine oil and filter change taught me two things, put the the new filter cartridge in the block and not the cannister when fitting, too obtain an oil level read the engine must be at rest for 30 minutes after it has been run to circulate the new oil.

Exchanging the fuel filter has a degree of difficulty that I have not previously encountered. The problem was aggravated by the fact that my replacement filter had no indexing marks, may be purchase genuine next time.

Auto box and filter change. This vehicle has just clicked over 120,000 and probably has not had a lot of TLC , LR pushed the envelope with their claims this is a sealed unit and does not require service. Draining the oil revealed transmission fluid the same colour as the engine oil I had exchanged and the filter pad in the same condition. In the future the oil will be exchanged every 30K and filter every 60K, clean fluid has to enhance the longevity of the box.

Removal and fitment of the pan also has a high level of difficulty because of minimum clearances and will not part company until the bracket supporting the loom on the drivers side is removed, the pan drainplug boss is not level with the interior face of the pan therefore you cannot completely drain the pan. A recipe to give you a bath.

Removal of the pan bolts located above the cross members can be achieved using a 1/4 drive Torx and a 1/4 cranked ring spanner for those that do not own every tool in the shed.

Progress is slow however "The List" is getting shorter.
Where did you source the transmission pan from and what fluid are you using. I want to do mine soon. Am likely to go with the Penrite fluid.

I used Penrite ATFBMV as I have always had good experiences using their products. The pan I sourced on Fleabay, good quality and exceptionally cheap compared to other prices I found.

Steel pan from eBay, include BMW in your search, as they use the same 6spd ZF units. Mine even came with a BMW part number on it. Don't forget a new duoprene gasket and new filter element.

Penrite BMV ATF, I ordered it from SCA online, they delivered it to my house.

My 2013 model is the 8 speed so no steel pan. Any preferences for the plastic replacement?

    Thanks

That's the one, no issues with the duoprene seal at all, just have to ensure the bolts are torqued correctly. 14Nm from memory.

    Exclamation car was

Finally got to car wash to remove mud etc from a recent long trip today.
Careful to NOT spray anywhere near electronics. Close to good enough clean - then it didn't want to start! Key placed under steering wheel foot on brake - no go for many tries. Got out, thought: lock it, computer re-boot idea - then it wouldn't un-lock for five + tries, mmmmm. tried asking it politely to open and it opened. foot on brake again, push magic button and YES. away we go home.

I don't know now which idea worked. I did say a few un-nice things about keyless ignition feature.

Genuine ZF pan LR06523 delivered from USA for around $260 including bolts and filler plug. Will go that route with Penrite ATF BMV and a few changes to flush out the old fluid as much as possible.
