Thread: What happened to your D3/D4 today?

Nothing happened to mine but I did start stripping the fridge slide and shelving out of the back ready for selling it. I've never kept a car for this long before, 6.1/2 years now but it's been a good one apart from that bloody awful useless EPB and no dipstick. Mutter mutter mutter.
Other stuff like the radio etc coming out tomorrow.

It was protecting itself.

Last service I noticed tell tale signs of pink coolant leaking around the infamour plastic coolant housing. Ordered one and associated O rings last week and it arrived in time to tackle the job on Friday afternoon.
Also got 2 x 5L containers of demineralised water to flush the system and 2 x 6L of Nulon premix coolant, a suitable large container to catch the fluids and a clamp pliers.

Issues:
- the induction Y had a seal twisted and obviously leaking based on the goop deposited on top of the glow plug harness and engine in that area
- removed the coolant housing only to find that the L shaped adaptor that goes from the top radiator hose to the housing simply snapped off where the hose is, the plastic had gone brittle and fallen to pieces.

Gave my LR indy a call to see what he might have and he did not have a new L adaptor but had a few wrecks to get one off. as the LR indie is only 5 mins away I got my friendly neighbour to run me up.
Got a good 2nd hand L adaptor, all 3 Y piece inductions seals, O ring seal for inside the L adaptor.

Fitted everything, swore trying to get last EGR pipe clip thing back on, what a B@!@@!! Everything else simple. Coolant in, bled via the 2 bleed screws, let it warm up, topped up as needed and checked for leaks.
The housing on drivers side of the block will definitely need doing and soon. Looking at youtube of doing that and looks to be a nasty job.

Anyway was very lucky as that L adaptor was not going to last much longer. If you are replacing the coolant housing it wopuld make sense to also replace that L piece at same time.

Total extra $1700 for the genuine screen. They tried to tell me "the only difference between the genuine and non-genuine is the non-genuine doesn't have the land-rover logo in the bottom corner". I asked "does that mean the non-genuine is made by Pilkington then, just without the logo?". "Oh no, but it's made to exactly the same specifications. It has to be".

Now go back to the insurance company and tell them it’s like for like and they need to cover that.

There's a weasel clause in the policy for a vehicle older than 3 years that allows them to specify aftermarket provided it meets the original specifications. I was hoping to get some backing from Obriens about their after-market screen but they absolutely insist it's identical in every way other than having the LR logo on it. Without having 2 to compare side by side I don't really have a leg to stand on.
