    re #2997....

would you use those holes for recovery points Blacky?

when I did my recovery training it wasn't a rule , but it wasn't recommended to use your bullbar as a recovery point

there are , of course , special recovery swivel mount points on some bars , front and rear.

BR in the winch/ matchstick bar 3/4 shot
You can see the big eyelet centrally below winch
I would presume that would be the front point?

With monocoque construction there is no real need to have lateral points and use a bridle
Assuming that central point is sufficiently strong?

So much easier having a single central recovery point albeit that one will be buried deep in the goop - but if you were diving into goop you would spool out some rope, engage clutch and then throw the shackle and rope in the footwell pinned by the closed door...

    Anyways that’s what I do

Taking out the radiator or intercooler in the middle of nowhere likewise silly

Honestly for my requirements it must be a full bar that protects the front and guard?

    Each to their own?

Ive had an arb bar with arial mount deform and push into a RRC bonnet just tapping a tree, up for both new bar and bonnet.
As said there are two ways to think about it.

No bar is going to stop a roo hitting your headlights unless its safari style with strong metal rungs going across the light area.

Even the most ridiculous 200kg bullbars won't protect your lights from roo heads, all bars go around or avoid lights, and you reduce the performance, breaking, efficiency and pedestrian safety of your car.

On that, as has already been mentioned, it seems the new defender has strengthening ribs engineered into the lights. Obviously not going to stop a roo breaking them but it's going to take much more than a flick of a branch to break them.

Ornamental, hmm maybe in terms of some forms of protection , agree they offer limited protection other than the radiator and a lower front area and are basically there to hold the winch and lights and offer recovery mounts. In my opinion this defender one looks tough for a factory tube bar..again 50mm tube does not bend easy(could be 40 or 50?), my rear tube bar is made from it and you can lean the weight of the car on it without deformation.

This RRC tube bar with brush bars would protect the front end guards and lights imo to a greater extent than the boxy heavy equivalents.

If you think about all the implications on a modern four-wheel drive for a bull bar they have probably done more than could be expected from the factory. Sensor, winch, airbag, camera, airflow, weight, effeciency and pedestrian compatibility.

Add some brush bars on the defender one and we have some pretty good factory protection. Looks to be a significant improvement on the bars available for current Defender.

I also think once all the camo comes off it's going to look pretty tough hopefully not too Mad Max.

It will be very interesting to see what style bars the aftermarket guys come up with.

Here and in Africa, the full bumper bar style is very common, and in my opinion,a lot stronger, and offers more vehicle protection, than the style of bar in the pics on the new Deefer.

Anyway, its good news that a bar is available for the vehicle.

    Oh come on BR
You’ve put up two of the lamest ornamental bars on existing defender!!!!
You sooooo should be in the marketing department!
Compare to an ARB bar with scrub bars???

I totally respect your opinion re: touching up a gum tree and causing damage but my old deefer spent many years in wallaby / roo country and despite me actively NOT wanting to nail wildlife I stopped counting at 20 ?

No damage to vehicle or bar or side rails
Oh I lie I did dent the guard once when a big roo bent around the side rail on a side hit and did one headlight.
Guard popped back out and a new headlight insert would have been $50 or so
Most of those hits were at full noise (100kmh with the poor animal jumping out of long grass into vehicle)

Now I probably don’t need that level of protection in my current location but I would still want real protection if I was spending money???

No idea what post that is but if your refering to holes in new defender bar, they look no different to the holes in most comp bars but who knows, if the bull bar is designed with proper recovery points there is no problem recovering from the bull bar.

You were able to order a mid ‘90s defender with a “factory” bar that looked exactly like a TJM steel bar minus the badging

Actual factory bars are like factory side steps

    Ornamental

3 points from my catch up of the thread.
    1. I have had roo strikes at speed on the outer front of my TJM steel bar and no damage at all. Decent size roos but not fully grown western grey or reds.

    2. The tube bars like LR produce as brush bars are actually useless (and rust).

    3. A recovery point on a bar would only be a recovery point if it wasn't connected to the bar but rather the chassis rails (or whatever passes for a chassis rail in the Deefer) and where the bar is just a shroud around the recovery point. The concertina arrangement of the air bug crush cans on which an airbag compliant bar must mount will deform outwards under high force (ie like that with snatching out of mud etc).
    Cheers
