Once the driveline issues are fixed, Puma Defenders are better than earlier models in many ways.

    Oh,well, here we go again.....

    no comment...

Continuing on from much earlier posts,LR have pushed their current models continually up to the next class.Defender stayed the same, but using the Disco as an example, its now gone from a family affordable touring wagon to virtually a rebadged Range Rover.

Sure a poverty pack D5 is available, but has less features than a Hyundai, for a ridiculous cost.In fact to replace my poverty pack D4,i need to spend well over $100K.Cant see the value in a new one at all.It definitely isn't a family touring wagon at all anymore.

Range Rover sport has done the same,it was an $80K vehicle when it appeared,in a class similar to D3,or slightly above. Now look where it is.

Looking at other brands, the Patrol has and still is in virtually the same class it always was in,a competitively priced family touring wagon.

Looking at LC 80/100/200 series, the vehicle has changed a lot,but is still in its same class.
Prado is the same, still in the same class as it was when it appeared in the mid 90's.
Pajero is the same, over the years, many changes, but vehicle is still in the same class.

All those vehicles are still affordable family touring wagons.

The 70 series are the same, been in the same class since the 80's.

IMHO,only,i don't think this going up a class, with each model change has been good for the LR brand. It changes the position of the vehicle in the market place.

Sales of the D5 haven't been great,as the salesman at the local dealer said to me,the D5 is difficult to move, and most D3/4 owners that come in,we never see them again. But a good second hand D4 won't stay in the yard for longer than a week.

The sales of the Jap vehicles that stay in the same class, over the years, speak for themselves.

Agreed, its literally a lube mod to box/tranny adapter) and an upgraded rear diff and maxi flanges(the latter 2 most people that are going offroad would do anyway on any defender.
As said the couple of issues can be fixed by a good indie LR shop in no time.

The result is a much better vehicle in nearly every way that the earlier ones for a tourer but mainly drivability and comfort.

The last of the pumas will be like the last of the classic rangies, always going up in value.

Here's one of my favourite builds Won’t be retro...

I don’t think anyone wants “the defender 20 years ago reincarnated”, that perception is entirely outmoded. We’ve been over that point ad nauseum.

Defender people actually want a new Defender, not just a new D4 or D5 under a different skin.
Sorry mate, what I was referring to was people in the market for current deffender and the new one, taking into account the new one will attract a whole new demographic to the defenders that liked the idea of a defender but didn't buy one because of the safety, drivability and comfort. Obviously not referring to 95% of people in the world Won’t be retro...

The later Deefers IMHO,look great as well, and there are some absolute crackers around, without too many mods.

So you are upset when there is a lack of features and upset when there is too much..hmm.

100k for what you get in a D5 is dam good value.

Please explain to be how the d5 is not a family touring wagon, it is infact one of the most family suitable touring wagons in existence in soo many ways!

Except that MOST family's cant afford one, thats the biggest factor in a family tourer.

Don't want to keep going, and cause an argument, you know where that leads....

Two things i need, and many others would as well, i presume, in a family touring wagon, is a proper full size cargo barrier, and a Bull bar.

No cargo barriers are available, that is a proper one similar to milford. Not a dog guard thing,or a half barrier.
One full Bar is available, and on previous experience, wouldn't touch one of that brand, and it looks F'n horrid.I have had a good look at one fitted.

And there are other things. Not going to go on and on.

My opinion only, others may think different.

What some journalists thoughts are, compared to people that actually own and use touring wagons, and have for many, many years,is often very different.

    Waiting for the new Defender.

Hopefully the D4 will go for a while longer.

A lack of such aftermarket accessories only reflects a lack of vehicle sales - IE: D5

Great touring wagon, but not being purchased by those who really need a bullbar (for driving outside the cities). D5 is just another version of Range Rover appealing primarily to that market. (Would be interesting to look at RRS sales which must have dropped since launch of D5).
