Same gearbox as LR have used for quite a few years now, though potentially with slightly different ratios.
Which is great for getting a heavy van moving on an incline, but not something you want to lean on continuously while clambering around the rocks and ruts.
The state of the art 9 and 10 speed autos haven't convinced me they're a better choice than the ZF8 with high/low range for a truly versatile vehicle - meaning the full gamut from rock crawling to spending hours at 110km/h on the dual carriageway.
Interestingly the Bollinger all-electric 4WD uses a 2-speed gearbox... do we want to call that high/low range or just a 2-speed auto? Electric motors really do change the game

So Defer... gimme 8x2 in a mild hybrid, but start adding serious electric shove and suddenly I'm all ears on the gearing options.
Absolutely no way you're getting away without low range on a FULL SIZE 4 wheel drive if all the drive is going through a transmission (no direct drive electric).
I have tried it and it does not work and that was with no load.
The vehicles are too heavy to do the kind of low speeds you need to be doing off road when maneuvering through difficult terrain especially where steep inclines are involved. The transmission overheats in no time with no lockup on the torque converter. Also, as already mentioned, reverse without low range is a killer with heavy loads and they sure won't give you two reverse gears in those 9/10 speeds.
The nine speeds have been available in the Evoque since 2011 and subsequently in the Disco Sport in 2016 which are far lighter vehicles so more suitable to the application.
With direct electric drive it's not even a question - no transmission at all and each wheel independently driven or, at least a motor front and back. That's the ideal.
Cheers,
Sean

Geneva Auto Show: Electric Jaguar Wins Car Of The Year
I’ve met a few Amarok owners, with mostly positive feedback. One business owner who had several (one after another) would do 120,000km per year who raved about them. Another was a vet who did more normal km, had several breakdowns and wouldn’t buy another.
