    Very interesting

Also noted was mention of “rigid chassis”
Maybe the subframe thingo is actually more chassis like?

I’m still sceptical until it is actually released in Aus but the above release about ANCAP guff is actually possible revealing?

I agree given LR's reputation in the past with safety, they should gain 5 star, however it is far from easy to achieve especially with a fold back roof imo.

So 3 much lower quantity selling vehicles than I just listed? Jeep is a ****box, Jimny is built to a price and 79 Series I missed and is 5 star rated. New Defender isn’t going to be live so again, is there ANY reason it shouldn’t get a 5 star rating? Making excuses for it based on 3 vehicles is pretty **** poor. Pretty much everyone else can do it, if LR can’t after all this time and money would show they aren’t serious about safety, just making a dollar.

That's it, as mentioned above, the single cab is the only one they upgraded with 5 star safety gear for mines, before that the single cab was 3 star, stands to reason the dual cab would be 3 star. When vehicles are untested, that just means "officially" like the current defender they know how unsafe they are that's why they don't test them..Jeep for some reason think all the worldwide tests must be as lenient as the states.

Notice how many are sold each year in OZ and internationally.

Imo they will respond to the defender and bring a new model put in the next few years.

I agree Homestar. If the D5 is 5 star then only cost cutting on the build strength of new Defender would see it all below.

    Cheers

Im not sure why you left the 3 cars out from your list with low safety ratings, these 3 are the "last real 4x4s" according to some. 79 series as a whole is not 5star safety, just 79single cab. Dualy is Zero as far as mines go (or if we want to guess, 3star)

No need to accuse me with that kind of speech, not respectful.

No ones making excuses for anything, just said 5 star is not easy based on other "real 4x4s" experience. I dont expect new defender to not get 5 star.

My understanding is that ANCAP is a relatively spurious assessment (other than impact testing)
Two vehicles can impact test exactly the same, same occupant injuries etcbetc but if vehicle B has side impact bags and knee bags they get a 5 star - vehicle A doesn’t have as many IED in the cab and it gets a 3 star????

I’ve also seen on the net photos of head on collision between 3 star Heavier vehicle and 5 star sedan

    Sedan demolished driver dead
    3 star driver walked away

Mass always wins irrespective of number of stars....

At one stage in the UK miles traveled per actual injuries sustained had defenders at the “safest vehicle” by measurement rather than inference???

Vehicle safety is a complex arena and a crash test and count of airbags assessment does little to change your actual outcomes in an accident.

From memory in Australia looking at traffic fatalities, the biggest improvements in road safety have been introduction of seatbelts and BAC testing. Everything else is incremental only?

For marketing purposes I agree JLR won’t be happy unless it gets full marks? I wonder how a centre front seat factors into ANCAP - am I right in the fact for the 5 Star 79 single cab it has two bucket seats (no centre seat)

My understanding is that the Jeep low star rating primarily related to pedestrian safety, not occupant safety. A function of its angular front design. The Jimny poor rating related to occupant cell integrity, a much poorer outcome.

No mate unfortunately the Jeep, despite the claimed use of more high tensile steels, had the firewall/footwell coming apart....it had physically got to failure point just in the frontal crash and was about to get very messy for the poor dummies.

I Was hopeful a while back that it was nust things like blind spot mirrors and pedestrian safety etc but the safety cell was weak as.

    Cheers

ANCAP is a test with many limitations, and it's amazing how many people rely on it without delving deeper.

A small car with a 5 star rating just means it is the safest in its class, it doesn't mean it is as safe as a 5 star large sedan.

Personally, I am just interested in how the driver and passengers fare when the car hits that other object. If you get extra points for rear seatbelt reminders or adaptive cruise control, then your car really isn't that much safer is it...

Yes but a 2.2 tonne base model new Defender with 5 star is the best of both worlds. If you can have lots of mass and 5 stars win win (But not for the poor 5 star mini Cooper that collides with you head on).

    Cheers
