We're back ....................
The trip to Gapuwiyak, Arnhem Land went very well - almost without incident.
We had 2 problems that come to mind - all the lights stopped working at Cammoweal Western Qld, after we stopped for dinner. The problem finished up being a bad connection on the light fuse under the drivers seat. To get going I ran a strap from the fuse to the light switch and diagnosed the problem when we got to Gapuwiyak. This held us up for a bit under an hour.
Secondly the wheel nuts on the rear pas side came loose at Pine Creek, after having driven over 4000kms. We picked up the problem quickly, tightened them without and damage. This was probably due to wearing away paint on the newly painted wheels.
The 130 went very well with exception of the high gearing of the transfer box, which struggled a bit, mainly when we were driving into some strong head winds.
Day 1 there is little to report. We left at about 5.00am from Andrews place in Sydney, drove up the Putty Road, had breaky at Willow Tree on the New England Highway and to a mate's place in Quirindi to pick up 4 x 55watt HID driving lights.
We continued on to Gunnedah, Moree, Mungindi, St George, Mitchell and Morven for tea at the famous truck stop. Here we fitted 2 of the driving lights to the bullbar and drove on to within 5kms of Augathella, where we swagged it for the night. There were lots of wallabies, roos and all manner of wildlife alongside the road at night - didn't hit any fortunately.
Next morning, after a coffee, we continued through Augathella, Tambo, Blackall and on to Barcaldine for breakfast at a great little bakery.
Huge cactus plant near Tambo
Echidna which was crossing the road near Blackall
A 7 meter wide load with a police escort
We continued on to Longreach, Winton, Cloncurry, Mt Isa and to Cammoweal for a truck stop dinner. After tea we crossed into the Northern Territory and drove another 150kms before pulling up for the night on a somewhat secluded spot a bit away from the road (a bit before 10pm)
To be continued
Erich
