As far as I know, it was done that way on the assembly of all of the early 86's / 107's, I think they where all the same until about 1957 with the introduction of the 88" and 109".
Have a look at a bonnet of a later assembled Series 1 , the pad are placed in a way to share equal load of the wheels weight.
.
The 80" and the 53 build 54 86" have N , S, E, & West pads with the side pads thicker to make up.
Later 86,s and 88,s have diagonal pads of equal thickness.
See my photo in Arthurs HECter thread.

About to join the ranks with this
Will make a proper thread on it over the weekend when I take it home...
LOL you didnt muck around. That is a great restorer right there and for the money you paid even better
I posted it to keep myself away from it but stayed up till 4am thinking about it.
next thing you know my aunt told me I can keep it up at her house (she actually wants to buy it off me already as a gift for her husband) and you told me to get it so I had no choice really! hahahah. looking forward to the joys of restoration
it was a really good buy and has some really good bits on it. I am looking forward to your thread
I am so pleased that this Landy is going to a good home.
What sort of top will you get for it ?
I had a Land Rover truck cab on my last registered 86", it was magic and I was always getting looks, I used to tell people that I could get more looks than a V12 Ferrari.!
