If it is only a small leak a radiator repair shop should be able to fix it unless the core is had it or you could try some Winn's Radiator Sealer , it will not block the radiator , it uses coconut that when it is forced into the leak by the radiator pressure , the coconut will dry once in the air to seal the leak.

    radiator updates

    1. something just didn't look right on the radiator, firstly had a leak down in the middle of the motor and the fan looked like it was installed back to front so needed to go back to correct. here is the radiator gunk, just doesn't stop...

    2. here is another minor leak from the manifold hose connection, just needs new clips here or better quality ones (these were new)

    3. here you can see green coolant on the side yet the inside was brown, so decided to drain the coolant, started her up and circulated the water then drained it all out, to my surprise the rest was clean and green

    4. drained coolant was clean and green, not sure whats happening here, dirty water heating up and coming to the surface perhaps...

    5. looked like it was incorrectly fitted the electric fan, so decided to turn around...

    6. correct way round hopefully, shouldn't make that much difference but looks correct... top has been secured, bottom needs longer bolts

a new replacement radiator ordered off ebay today, so will clean up the base and prep for the new radiator, didn't want to take any chances on an old radiator giving me probs later on.

Did you run the engine long enough for the thermostat to open ?

Have you put a radiator flush additive through the cooling system , could help to get rid of the rust scale in the block .

    more updates

    1. tightened the bottom bolts and the fan seems to be working ok, just needs wiring but its done and secured for now

    2. got some extra new hose clamps for here and for the main hoses for the radiator, these are a better quality item then the originals i had

    3. my next problem - the floor does not fit flush cause i used defender 110 engine mounts for the gearbox and it has raised it so now fouls on the bottom of my foot panel, might need to go back to the original gearbox mounts which sit the box lower

whitehillbilly64 - that is a good idea, will keep that in mind, thx for the suggestion

BSF - no thermostat in the engine so should be flowing nicely thru, beginning to think all that gunk is from the radiator and maybe not the block, but not sure

1950landy - radiator flush maybe next on the list to buy, but have not done yet

also applied some degreaser to the manifold and washed, there seems to be some smoke coming off the manifold for some reason, lets see if the wash helps.

I would think the rust is coming from the block more than the radiator as it is copper. Wynns make a good radiator cleaner that uses coconut husk in it which helps to dislodge any rust scale. If you tell the auto shop that the water is rusty they should be able to steer you in the rite direction & brand . You will need to flush the system with water a few times until it is clean & don't put any inhibitor in until it is otherwise you are just wasting it.

    small update

Thx 1950Landy - what your saying makes sense, it will need another few flushes i would think

    1. found most bits needed for the centre floor panel incl spring for the 4wd lever and cover plate then realised this panel should have gone onto the floor first then followed by the two side panels so will need to redo the floor panels... my error

    2. gearbox is stated before is sitting too high and found these originals that i had kept, need to re think the mounts and either use these old ones or cut down the later model ones on there at the moment which are brand new...

    3. electric fan completed and secured all way round. radiator was removed and looking to buy some radiator flush but just thinking whether to flush with the radiator or without... new radiator is on its way and have new coolant so want to make sure its all clean before fitting the new radiator and getting the engine gunk in the new radiator

You will need the radiator in if you are going to use a radiator flush additive , you need to get motor to operating temp & run for what ever time the state on the bottle. If you are going to buy a new radiator I would not fit it until after you have flushed the system other wise you will get rubbish in the new one, also as some one else said fit a filter sock.
