I have a spare 10,000lb in the shed I will try in the hole. Its no warn but it has the same mounts and roughly the same size. My big question is how to run the flare head through the rear cross member without spoiling the look of the rear end and retain the tow hitch. I will work it out. Probably just need to hold my head on the right angle

Yes i looked at that but it is off to the side and would limit the spool on the winch drum. I am thinking of a slot above the tow hitch with a double roller flare head behind the cross member or a nice polished solid flarehead and soft winch rope in the same spot.
Any suggestions would be helpful while the body is still off the chassis and building the winch carriage is easy.

The slot above the hitch would be ideal and would enable you to repair the x-member again in you ever removed the winch later.
A bit left field but is there no chance of mounting the winch upside down under the floor so that the rope fairlead could be attached to the bottom on the x-member? That way you don't have to cut the x=member. The tow ball plate would get in the way though. Mmmmm. Sorry, thinking aloud.

I reckon I could get the winch in behind there alright and make it so it drops out the bottom for maintenance etc and if the slot was high enough I might only have to increase the size of the second pair of mount bolts and cut the top set of mount holes out. I could plate behind the crossmember and inside the chassis rails. I will have a good look at it tonight.

I have often looked at that area as a potential spare wheel location.
There should be enough space for a winch, particularly if you do it now while your chassis is open. The only issue or clash may be the exhaust.

Ok so there is plenty of room there and the winch would be well protected with a solid mount plate. Cutting a slot in the rear section would destroy the PTO hole in the chassis if it is centered but I do not like pulling off to the side so It would have to go.
Mounting a roller flare head looks yuck. I stuck one on there last night and it will have to be a non roller one with dacron rope.


The main hitch mount bolts are the lower two so not a big deal to loose the top ones and increase the size of the rest. so now its back to the hack cut and weld while the thing is apart.

Well its been a while since I laid a glove on the Bunyip but I have been away much of the past few weeks and will be until July but I have been buying the odd part and painting odds and sods.
I started to lift the gearbox back in to the chassis this afternoon but the rain came in again and drove me inside by the fire.


Thanks to John I now have a beautiful rust free bulkhead to rub back and paint when I clear some space in the shed.


After looking at the build up of oily gunk inside the bell housing I think it might be a good idea to pull the sump off the motor and do the rear main seal. I also need to find a double row pulley for the balancer so I can run a compressor for air con
