    Cheers,
    Hi Tim.
In no way intending to steal Andrew's thunder, I've got a lathe down in Bunbury also if you need one. A bit smaller than a $4.5K unit, but good enough for medium projects. I need some more practice on it!

    Cheers,
    Chris

Seeing that you are spoilt for choice in the lathe dept, feel free to come to Narrogin and use mine as well

And today came a sacrifice, in the form of a recently procured front axle. Hopefully the drivers side swivel outer on this is serviceable!

Mmmmmm rust! The swivel balls look quite good here, unfortunately they have a quite a bit of pitting, and a pretty deep ridge from the seal in the "straight ahead" position:

    Interesting steering lock:

Both sides had these split, um, nails? I don't think I'll reuse them though

    Ugh, petrified grease:

Here's one of my pet hates, bearing nuts done up with a torque chisel

The diff is in really good nick, even if it has the old style seal in it. I may use the crown wheel and pinion instead of the rear one from that was in the car. The axles are very good also, so they'll be packed away for a rainy day.

    Cheers,

It's a combination of having no social life, no wife, and a bit of after hours work, with some tactical skiving off in the middle

I like this thread and am embarrassed by it at the same time through lack of my own activity on my Diesel. I'll aim to be inspired by it though rather than depressed. Keep up the good work.Let me know if you fancy a break and want to come down here to work on Mutley errrrr........... I mean for a rest.
    cheers,

Nice work you are doing there Tim!

Unfortunately new swivels, bought from a blue-box, rust whilst sitting still in a shed.

On my S3 I soaked the swivels in molasses until all of the rust was gone; roughened the surface with a small grinding stone and filled the pits with a two-part epoxy filler. So far after 3 years and filled with EP90, there have been no leaks or rust,. I think the filler is called Liquid Steel, or some such similarly ridiculous name,

    Cheers Charlie
