I'm not sure why. The pinion looks a lot better than a Rover one, and the only thing that I can think of is if there is a difference in the crownwheel or the hemisphere flange. Either that or just bad luck on the track!
We tried to fit a P38 diff into a Rover housing at your house.It didn't fit through Rover diff hole in the housing.
But that said, I think that it could be easily made to fit.
