Replaced steering relay and steering box/column.
After putting it off I could lift the relay out by hand. It must have been the oil leaking for the extra time I procrastinated acting as a penetrant. (If thats a word)
There's more to do...
No point in having a hobby that concludes.
Famous last words.
Ended up doing the main bearings as well. 3 out of 5 lowers were showing copper and also no 1 upper.
Back together and all running nicely. I hope there are no oil leaks, I don't think I could handle having to pull the motor out again....not just yet anyway.
Yesterday investigated the new steering shimmy at 80kph on the County.
Being almost certain it would be swivel preload, I put the front up on stands, took the wheels off, disconnected the track rod and drag link - and found that the preload was as close to the book as could be expected with the seals installed.
On looking further, I found that the chassis end bolt on the panhard rod was loose! This must have been a result of incorrect torquing when I had it off a couple of weeks ago to weld the cracked diff pan (I can't remember looking up the figure). I removed the bolt and checked that there was not significant wear to either the bolt or the bush inner sleeve. Then reassembled it, this time using locktite as well as the nyloc nut, and torquing it correctly - 176nm is really tight.

John?
What series of D1 you got? I may have a pair of those new fangled electric mirrors, I hate the tiny little things and replaced mine with "proper" truck mirrors. My Disco 1 is late 93 build, pre-update.[/QUOTE]
PM sent.

Well, yesterday I pressure cleaned the car, gave it a scrub and a rinse, then moved onto the chassis, the underside, and the engine bay.
Not a pink stain in sight
Also tried polishing one section, which actually turned out nicely.
Might keep going with it![]()
