After a walk to town to buy yet another spark plug socket cos all 3 of my others have grown legs, cleaned the number 7 spark plug again and cured a misfire that was obliterating any/all power from the engine.

Set the ignition timing with an idle rpm of 750. Now that the electrics are sorted, there's far less load on the alternator, so the base fuel mixture could be leaned back off.

Can't wait to test drive it, but the expensive new rocker cover gaskets I bought at B.O.R are leaking like a sieve. Oil pooling on the intake manifold, not happy!

Anyway, will sort that leak later this arv.

Got the engine warmed up, cleaned the green/brown gunk of the windows (first time a bucket of water has been near it in 3 years), cleaned the black gunk of the rims I bought from forum member pooky (legend!) Threw on some tire shine, used the air compressor to blow out all the wire trimmings from the previous months work, drove to the servo for some fuel and didn't realise the kickdown cable had disconnected itself, reconnected, drive home, Jeremy's back on the rd :-D

    LED Position Lights

Tuesday: Received my set of clear-lense LED brake/tail, indicator and parking lights in the post. Installed the parkers that night.

Saturday: Replaced all other lights and removed license plate and it's light ready for the tyre carrier to go on. Dug 28 years of dirt out of the rear, right corner bodywork.

Sunday: Temporarily fixed indicator bug by removing the bulb in the instrument panel. Will split the circuit properly at a later time. Cut up a nice bit of stainless steel to make a new number plate holder. Reinstalled it and the light on the left side of the rear door, where the newer defenders have it. Discovered that there were bugs in the brake and parking light circuits causing the fog lamp indicator to illuminate when braking. Swore.

Monday: Back on aulro looking for answers.

You have current getting back along the wires that should be earthed.

The main offenders can be the earthing for the light and brake light filaments, some times is the side of that bulb itself that has gone tarnished or has dirt built up around it and that causes it to have a loss of contact to earth.

But first check the ( Black ) earth wire that comes from the tail light assembly to ground on both sides.

Took the family out in Jeremy, ended up at Meatworld in Maroochydore, parked next to a very late model supercharged Mini Cooper.

My eyes immediately caught a glimpse of some very cracked and perished rubbers around the Minis rag top. Looked back at my 1987 Rangey, that was bought as a wreck, left out in a paddock exposed to the elements for years, yet 99% of it's rubbers are still in excellent condition.

They really don't make 'em like they used to

Thanks wrinklearthur, i've found a couple of references to bad earthing causing this kind of issue. Time to break out the wiring diagram and the fine-toothed comb.

    Aluminium cover plate

Made a mould to cast in aluminium, a cover plate to the bottom of my series 2a transfer case, to replace the existing, prone to leak, steel pan....!

Pour tomorrow with a bit of luck.
