Are you still talking Salisbury, or do you mean fitting a tube to a standard rover front?

This is the inner end of a salisbury tube, so I can't see how(and why) you'd attach plates if you fitted a strengthening tube.

It was a Rover axle, the plates being needed probably because of the way the housing curves up to where the diff bolts on. But looking at your photo, maybe the inner tube would just weld onto the cast centre housing of a Salisbury. Interesting.

I wonder, if there is a supplier in Hobart of that size pipe and what grade of steel / alloy would be the best to use?

No point in using any high strength steel for laminating the inside of a Salisbury axle tube. In bending and torsion, the highest stress will always be on the outside diameter of the existing axle tube. The material in the laminating sleeve will carry much less load than the existing axle tube.

The modulus of elasticity, which is the material property that affects deflection/stiffness, is the same (within a negligible amount) for all low carbon and high strength steels.

It would be more important to match the OD of the sleeve to the ID of the existing axle tube to achieve a close fit, and how you weld the two together so the sleeve is made to share the load from the transition of the cast diff housing to the axle tube.

I spoke to an ex associate of Maxi Drive yesterday and they indicated that Mal only did a few Salisbury housings.
His way of strengthening them was to put a piece of 12x40 mm strap from one side to another running under the pumpkin.
As Serg has previously indicated you could get things caught in any arrangement like this.
I suspect that Kangaroo parts could get caught on it on the way out the back.

Found the cause of the destruction.. (of the Red 110)
Rear axle broke at 90km/h after hitting a massive pothole. Stranded 200km from the nearest town in Botswana with Lions & Elephant roaming the bush.
From this link you'll see more pics and how they managed to get going again.

Flickr set: Defender 110 Breakdown in Botswana

They even managed to break a Hilux during the recovery. Bad luck chaps.

There you go - 90kmh is too fast on the dirt. And before anyone says anything, yes, I've done it, and after a few very close calls, no, now I don't.

Except it looks like a tarred road where they are stopped. He just says "Rear axle broke at 90km/h after hitting a massive pothole"

Nothing worse than a sealed road that has potholes that you could loose a VW Beetle in.
Drivers become complacent and you hit the pothole from hell at 90 km/h
Don't see it in Australia often but other areas of the world its a reality
