I'm just thinking about the chainsaw oil on the K&N filter. I'm imagining how much the oil itself blocked the filter and it possibly just washed the dirt through the filter.
The K&N stuff is more like a glue that doesn't dry than oil. You could spray it on a vertical wall and it wont run. It'll just still be there years latter, covered in dust. You have to use the K&N cleaner to wash it as well as nothing else soap based seems to move it. The K&N cleaner must have a solvent in it because it makes it hard to breath if you get a lunge full of the mist. I spray it on my hands to clean them afterwards because the normal shed hand cleaner I have that will clean grease and oil just fine, doesn't budge the K&N oil.
Happy Days.

No wonder you had issues. I have only ever used the red K&N oil in the aerosol can.
