Since Rover could not afford to design, test, and tool up for two new gearboxes at the same time, obviously the same one would have to be used - and while the 101 needs dictated the strength of the box, it is likely that without the Rangerover requirements, the design would have been a lot more agricultural than it turned out.

I recall seeing a doco which had the RR designer on it. He was really upset that they used the LT95 in the RR because of the shift quality.

Maybe not worth it in a gutless on tdi but a chipped Td5 wouldn't baulk at another speed I'm sure...
It's totally different, the MT 82 won't go onto a Tdi or Td5 so trying it is folly. Pat

    Hi Pat,
    Why wouldn't a Tdi pull 6th in a MT82? It's almost the same ratio as 5th in a R380.

    0.770:1 R380

mainly for that reason but probably more to do with the fact that a power kick is only a couple of minutes with a screwdriver and shifter away with no risk of a computer saying..

"I'm sorry dave, I cant let you do that"

A mates uncle use to build race cars and specialise in gearboxes. He would build 6 speeds out of 4 speeds (in same housing) If I had the coin Id take him a lt95 and see if it could be done

Crikey! Me too. What did he do, use custom straight-cut gears on existing shafts?
At any given point in time, somewhere in the world someone is working on a Land-Rover.
