Perhaps the real question should be "is a modified 300tdi better than a modified Td5?"

In the context of the Original OP, which I believe related to towing....
    Not a chance.
And Dougal yes, I could see a heavily modified 300tdi being at the same level as a stock Td5, but 'eating it'?
    I highly doubt that.

There is no actual end to "modified" so it's an endless argument. Clearly landrover thought the TD5 was better.

It's only slight modifications to a 300tdi to equal Td5 output numbers (50Nm and 17kw).
Crank the boost to 20psi, adjust fuelling to suit and you're there.
My calcs suggest a 300tdi at the limit of the stock turbo will deliver just over 100kw from 3000-4000rpm and approx 400Nm at 2000rpm.
That will beat a stock TD5.

If you are allowed to fit extra turbos the limit becomes holding the head down. 140kw and over 500Nm should be acheivable at 30psi boost.

At the heart of the matter they are both 2.5L diesels with 2 valves per cylinder. Structurally the TD5 is a better engine and this ultimately means you can crank more from it. But until you hit structural limits the race can be more or less even when fitted with the same turbos and intercoolers.

    Although.
Dave has suggested that a 300tdi can get up to stock Td5 levels.
Is your dad's Td5 chipped? Auto vs Manual? Specs on yours?
Dad's is stock, mine has bigger turbo with about 20-25psi depending on load etc, bigger intercooler, exhaust and other supporting mods and pump mods... Never gets over 600c EGTs and uses about 10-12L/100km depending on what your'e doing with it...

    both manuals with stock gearing...

    Interesting.
I have a mate with a similarly equipped D1 to my D2, in terms of bar, etc. I have a winch whereas he doesn't, he's got a rear bar where I don't, etc.
He's had the IP out and 'fiddled with', also running higher boost. Don't know the details of either but apparently it was done at Bruce Davis so you'd think it was done with half an idea about it.
Mine goes significantly higher and it's stock as a rock.

Yeah, to be honest I've been in some supposedly "expert" modified 300s and I struggled to notice a difference..

The stock turbo is very limiting, it's almost at the end of it's map in stock trim and pumping through that tiny standard 'cooler just makes it a heat pump if you try and push it.. The standard pump and injectors can easily make the power, but the standard turbo can't make cool boost to keep it cool... Plus, the stock 300 exhaust manifold design is joke!

I should make a video of mine accelerating...

Drive five Tdi's and five Td5's and the best Tdi's will beat the worst Td5's,in my experience there is a huge difference in tune with factory stock engines and as they get older and wear they get worse. Both engines have a big performance gap depending on weather they are in a disco or defender, auto or manual. Which is another way of saying that a properly-fiddled tdi 300 would give more than respectable performance when transplanted into a heavier (?) Classic body...

Having said that, GavinWibrow's td5-powered Classic LSE has a lot more get-up-and-go than my 3.9 V8. Indeed, it feels 'invincible'

Yes, and the best Td5 will beat the best Tdi, by a considerable margin.

OK then, the Td5 will beat the Tdi,thats until the ECU loom gets oil in it or the plastic dowel pins cause the head to go. .They are both good donks but both are bettered by the TDCi,buy the time they come on boost the ''pumah'' is gone. Pat
