The TD4 is a double OHC engine (4 valve head) Commonrail direct injection and is 1951cc. The TD4 is a BMW engine that owes nothing to Rover.

All TD4s have the the BMW engine and gearbox fitted.

The TD4 is related to the TD6 (BMW) but the TD5 is a close relative to the L series and not the BMW engines.

Correct.... The TD4 is the same lump that's fitted to the BMW 320 diesel and has nothing to do with the TD5.

The original 'L' series diesel is IIRC a Perkins design.

I think I will stick with Rover Cars I think! I am fairly sure I am correct, then again I am not sure this many people can be wrong!

Its good to see someone who knows when to quit!!

BMW was stuck with the L series when it took over Landrover. As soon as it could BMW replaced the L series with the TD4 - hence the two vastly different engines (in my view the TD4 is not necessarily better than the L series - just different) with the only common bit really being 4 cylinders and being just under 2 litres.

It just does not make sense that is all. BMW purchased the entire Rover Group in 1994, and Rover cars continued with the L Series up until April this year when they went belly-up. Why would they use two different engines and why would they be the exact same capacity - 1951cc.

They are not the same capacity.

L series - 1994cc, Bore 84.5mm, Stroke 88.9mm, single OHC, 2 valve head, external rubber timing belt, 19.5:1 compression ratio, power about 72 kw

TD4 - 1951cc, Bore 84mm, Stroke 88mm, double OHC, 4 valve head, internal simplex timing chain, 18:1 compression ratio, power about 84 kw

    They are clearly different engines

The sole similiarity between them is that they are diesel, 4 cylinder, and turbo intercooled.

    Thats it - no more

Damn, it was just getting exciting .

You mentioned that you came from Rover car circles, but you're now here - you must have an interest in Land Rovers too. You are more than welcome to stay  .

I think timM has already gone and bought a different car whilst everyone else was bickering over engine specs.
