    Yes a cooler can be repaired But (theres always a but)

    I would only do such repairs purely as a get me home measure... your only repair option is soldering and the temps reached in the cooler are above the "softening"point of most solders... It wont melt it but it wont help it last in the long term.

    If you have any doubt about its condition replace the cooler...

    I am sorry to hear you are having more whoes hopefully it is the oil cooler
    maybe with it sitting without coolant for so long while you had the head problems, finished off the cooler
    disco seriesII mods so far:-bullbar,hyd winch,
    detriot locker,lsd front,C.D.L kit,chipped and bigger intercooler,2" lift,rock sliders, lsd in transfer case, modified auto trans.

    **** ed, thats a pretty bad run of luck you are having mate. Its highly unlikely a head would cause such drastic problems so suddenly, unless it failed catastrophically in which case you would hear something i would have thought when you run the engine. I would definitely be persuing the whole oil cooler theory, check all the connections. Can the cooler be removed and taken to a radiator place and pressure checked? matt

    Pressure testing was the only way we found the last one, at about 40 to 50 psi engine oil pressure, it only needs a tiny pinhole...
    And I would buy a new one, as they are quite a difficult item to repair adequately if the corrosion has set in. Some of the original casting is quite thin.

    Ok Just finnished. The head is fine but the oil cooler has visibly failed. The copper internal component has visible damage and holes. Guessing The repairs and good fluids dislodged the rust damage.

    Fantastic news Edd, just bolt up a new one and you're away. Just think of the good fortune that it didn't happen at a later stage when outback somewhere!

    Hmmm, so is then something that should be replaced at regular intervals? If so then how often? Not something you would want to happen in the middle of nowhere.
